My current phone is a Samsung somethignorother,.
Got it in 2003 I think...

I haven't 'bought' a phone for 7-8 years. I just get the kid's old 'broken' ones. I've had this old broken "LG" for 3 years. Works just fine, battery last's a couple of days even with above average use.
Before the LG it was a Samsung. I like their products.

I think I usually go 3 - 6 years and usually upgrade when the phone is starting to stop working well. I've almost always had the most basic Nokia. My current phone is the first that I've purchased because I wanted the phone.

I've had my current Droid for a month now and think it is the bee's knees.

Prior to that, I had the HTC Touch Diamond, which I thought was an amazing phone until I got the Droid. My only complaint was the pathetic battery life. I always had to carry around a spare with me. I actually had this one for almost 2 years which is long for me. I usually change about every year. I hope to keep this Droid for 2 years as the off the shelf price of these smart phones is becoming astronomical.

I run right about a year on phones.... I'm getting close to that mark with my 3GS... Probably going I4 in the next few months....

The rugby is a good phone... My dad has a first gen and it has held up for about a year and a half now.... He was killing about a nokia per year before that.... He's just hard on them....

I just changed phones. I guess I had the last one for 4 or 5 years. I was 2+ years over the time to upgrade. I think I've only had 3 or 4 phones since around 1995. The first one I had was a pretty big Motorola. I donate most of my old phones to the battered women. I think one of them could have probably defended herself with that first phone. I also only use mine for calling people and an infrequent text. My wife has a Blackberry (Crackberry as the guy in the store called it) that she thinks is part of her.

That's me...tough on phones. The vintage nokia in the pic has survived a brisk ride on my whale tail up until that 50mph decreasing radius sweeper...then it was launched laterally like a slalom skier...in the rain...into a 5" deep puddle. Poured isoprpyl alcohol on it and dried it with a hair drier. That was 3 years ago. Worked fine until just recently.

I have had a Motorola RAZR since they came out. I have been through 3 versions. Still have the V3X. They are incredibly robust phones, tiny as hell (I hate iPhones just because to me, they are too big for my front pocket) and do exactly what I want it to: Be a phone.

My requirements are that simple. So I'm sticking to the RAZR as long as this will last.

Dueller 07-01-2010 09:09 PM

Hey schumi...guess I can hijack my own thread:D...fill us in on the move, new job...never did hear what happened to the gf.

I tend to stay several years behind in phone technology. When every one was getting camera phones, I finally got a flip phone. When every one was getting media phones, I got a camera phone, but that was only after my flip phone died after getting splashed on a water ride a Disney.

My current phone is a Verizon Voyager that I found at Goodwill for $8. I'm amazed at what it does... we've been with Verizon so long we were grandfathered in on a package that's no longer available. $10 over the regular cell plan and I get unlimited data. Wouldn't mind having a Droid, but the data plan goes to $30/month at that point. If my wife and I both make that move then that's an exra $40 per month/$480 per year/or about $4000 by the time our daughter goes to college. Just can't believe the slight increase in utility is worth that much.

The trick is to bake them in the oven, at 170F, with the battery out.

Speaking of old phones. Do any of you guys get the warranty on them? My wife and son have broken and lost theirs enough to where it's paid off.

When I got my iPhone, no warranty was offered. Is it available now through AT&T, Apple or is there a 3rd party warranty available for new iPhones?

UconnTim97 07-02-2010 10:00 AM

I always get the insurance as the wife and I tend to not be so gentle with our phones. It has paid off many times over for us. YMMV

I understand that you can get a rider policy on your homeowner's / renter's insurance policy to cover your iPhone. Similar to what you would get for jewelry, etc.

Hmm, I use my Verizon BB's internationally several times a year. It even works in Japan. The global phones now come with sim cards as standard. I just call and turn on global roaming, and when I come back turn it off.

Evidently this has changed and fairly recently. In 2007 I was flying from Phoenix to London and seated next to me was a Verizon exec. He tried like the dickens to get me to switch over to or even look at Verizon. When I told him I spent 90% of my time overseas he said "we do not at this time care about any market other than America" and our phones do not work overseas.

Regarding extra or any insurance. Have never broken or lost a phone. Dropped one or two from time to time and nicked them up but nothing worse. Not worth spending the extra $$ on something that I do not use.

I love my G1. I've got it hacked, and I'm running the almost newest version of Android code. My only complaint about my phone is the camera which sucks, but that doesn't really bother me. Everything else the phone does, which is why I've got it anyway, is so good.

I don't see myself going to a non-android phone anytime soon.

I bought my RAZR in August 2006. I was so pissed off at my previous phone that I threw it on the ground in the parking lot of the Jersey Gardens Mall in Newark as soon as I had the new RAZR. Now I want to use my now slick Falken RT-615's to do a big 'ol burnout on top of it.

[You'll probably see a link to the video soon]

GAWD I hate that phone!

-People that I fly with pull out their iPhones when we are sitting, waiting for clearance to leave, and bring up the wunderground.com picture of the weather radar in our destination. It shows WAY more detail than our own weather radear could even hope to show us!

Tsk! Why doesn't every airliner have...via satellite telephone...a link to wunderground.com's instant weather radar? Aircraft weather radar is designed to be as lightweight as possible. It works, but you sitting in your house probably have 10 times the video of storms that the pilots flying into your city have. Yet, if the A320 had a data link via sat phone to a website....REAL TIME extremely accurate radar pictures could be brought to the cockpit. With WAY more accuracy than on-board weather radar.

My RAZR phone has terrible recemption, as well. It is an early phone, and has a metal case.

It doesn't work right in my house. It works well in my neighbors houses, but I guess I am in a null or something. I have hundreds of steel straps in my attic, holding my wood roof to my house's concrete block walls, and the interior walls are wood and gypsum board, so I can't figure out why it is so bad. I have poor reception with this phone around the country as well- I suspect RAZR phones are weak. Especially the metal case versions.

N!

Joeaksa 07-02-2010 04:26 PM

If you want to sell the RAZR (for something reasonable that is) when you are done with it let me know.

Rick Lee 07-02-2010 04:29 PM

I'll start a thread on this in a few more weeks, but I'm Europe-bound in September and will probably bring my ancient RAZR GSM phone with me. It's been great in China. I just buy local SIM cards and I'm all set.
