I'm moving to Georgia
Looks like the wife and I will be moving to Marietta Georgia. Today she received a job offer and I'm being set up for an interview so hopefully that pans out. So what's the low down on Marietta ? How's the local PCA ? And what about Porsche shops/mechanics ? What's the housing like ? We would be looking for a standard 3/2 with basement with maybe an acre or so of land so a 2-3 car garage could be installed. Our oldest son lives in Dahlonegha which is I think about 45-50 minutes from Marietta. So Georgia guys speak up please
.

Hello,
I am located in Kennesaw close to Dallas Highway (which leads to Marietta)...Somewhat new to the location as well..Lived here a few years back and wanted to move back... Auto Atlanta has been around for a long time...They work on Porsches and are in or near Marietta.. If you are looking for a home you describe, it will be a hard find in Marietta....It is more of a historic community with older homes and tougher building code enforcements..... That is why we bought in Kennesaw,,,we got acreage, good schools, new home, decent taxes. and I was able to build a nice pool (18 x 36) and detached garage for my toys.... |

Just call it Mayretta and you'll fit right in. Depending on where she works, you might want to look around a little bit.

I grew up just north of there and live in Atlanta now. Marietta is not in Atlanta.
Peach State PCA is the local chapter, they are a good group and always seem to have an event around the corner, Home. There are several Porsche shops in the area, Ryland's Import Service is in Marietta and a friend of mine works there, Franz Blam Racing is about 20 minutes away in Tucker and is very well respected. There is a new shop that just opened in Kennesaw a few minutes north of the area and several others that I can't remember the names of. You won't have any issues finding someone to care for your car. There is a good local car show the first Sunday of every month called Caffeine and Octane that is well attended by Porsche owners. There are some photos of past shows here, Caffeine & Octane - a set on Flickr. Housing is all over the map. Anything from $150k 70's ranch homes with massive lots to million dollar McMansions on postage stamp lots with enough covenants to keep you from looking sideways. Do some serious research on where your house will be in relation to work, traffic can get absolutely nasty and a few miles in the wrong direction can make all the difference. The market has been pretty flat for the past year or two so you should be able to find a deal and prices are slowly trending back up. Let me know if you have any specific questions or want some info about a house or area, I have been here a long time and know most of it pretty well. |

It's not a bad area. Peachstate Region PCA is very active, we normally have around 100 folks at our monthly meets which take place all over the area. My wife and I live in the Canton area which is just up I-575 from Marietta. You should be looking in Woodstock or Canton if you want some land w/o being raped for it. I'm not 100% familiar with real estate prices in Marietta right now but when we moved here from Alpharetta 5 years ago this was the best area in terms of property taxes and bang for buck.
We have a ~4900 sq. ft. home on .25 acres that we purchased for about $280K. As you can well imagine, there are plenty of properties for sale around here at the moment (outside the subdivision, with land for building) and the eyes of the developers have just moved in this direction, so I'd imagine values and prices will be moving up again in the coming years. Dahlonega would probably be over an hour from Marietta, it used to take me about 45-60 minutes to get to the start of the Three Gap ride (a few miles from Dahlonega Wal-Mart) early on Sunday mornings.

I live in Gerogia and it's a pretty nice state. Marietta is quite pretty and has some really pretty areas and houses.
That being said, the traffic from Marietta to downtown which in on 75 South is about the worst in the area. Atlanta has a very small downtown/midtown area, and the rest of the "city" is really just a spread out suburbia. ON houses, if you are looking for one with a basement, they are few. They can be tough to find because the Ga red clay is like freakin concrete. If you do find a house with a decent basement, make SURE that there has been waterproofing done or work it into the contract....lots of leaks down here. Folks in the city and surrounding areas are from all of the country, but get out of that general proximity and you will see plenty of missing teeth, jacked up pickups and rusted out carports...make sure to be polite and all will be well. Plenty of lakes if you like to fish, and about 45 minutes North of Marietta and you are in the mountains, and it's damn pretty up there. Lots of trout fishing, kayaking, hiking...all sorts of stuff to do. Plus, I live here and I'm awesome. |

I've noticed that most new homes going up have daylight basements; I believe that 80% of the homes in our subdivision have them (I can't imagine life without one!!). Older neighborhoods around here either have block cellars or slabs and I've even spotted some on posts as you really get out there.

Mayretta
Make sure you find out where your house is in relation to the Big Chicken. Everything in Mayretta is based on knowing where the Big Chicken is and knowing you can go anywhere if you start at the Big Chicken. I would highly recommend picking up several Jeff Foxworthy DVD's, learn how to talk and expand your vocabulary, then make sure you know where and what the Big Chicken is. This will make for a smooth transition.

From Marietta, take Peachtree Circle to Peachtree Road, turn left, go a mile and turn right on Peachtree Parkway. Stay on that through three lights, ya know, just past Peachtree Station, and turn left on Peachtree Industrial Blvd. Two miles up the road, hang a right on Peachtree Lane, follow the signs to the Big Chicken....cant' miss it. It's right there on Cobb Parkway...a few blocks off of Peachtree, uh, well, you get the picture.

Actually, I think it is a basement w/ windows but what I was referring to might also be called a 'walkout' basement. Only one side of our basement actually abuts the ground.
edit: Unless you're in a hurry, you should wait until the second week of June!! PCA meeting . . . uh . . . somewhere. It's gotten to the point that my wife tells me where we're going for it. edit again: looks like the meeting is June 14th in Gwinnett.
