LOL, Knopfler and Chet Akins on acoustics. it doesn't get much better than this. At 3:45 they start playing "imagine":

The duets w/ Chet were pure genius!

I have the album, Neck&Neck, they put out.

A classic line during one of the songs is just after a really well executed guitar solo by Atkins, Knopfler smoothly opines to Atkins: "I see you've played before..."

I have heard of, and am a fan of, all of these guitarists...except for Knopfler.

I've never heard of him before. What band did he play in?

pete3799 07-07-2010 05:56 AM

Dire Straits

I never realized dire straights guitarist was considered to be an axe man in the league of the others mentioned, all of whom are not just legends, but all time greats.

imcarthur 07-07-2010 06:08 AM

Knopfler belongs in that company (along with others) but Frampton doesn't imho.

Please give me some examples of great guitar work in any dire straits song.

Frampton is fantastic IMO, i love his talking guitar stuff.

imcarthur 07-07-2010 06:28 AM

Private Investigations is masterful, Brothers in Arms, Money for Nothing for some head bang etc etc.

And listen to the clips above. He outplays Chet pretty convincingly . . .

Not only that Snipper, he is a masterful writer, a god of guitar tone and one of those guitar players that another guitar player need hear only a couple of notes or a phrase to know instantly who it is.

I like his stuff with the Nottinghill Billys too.

m21sniper 07-07-2010 06:43 AM

Personally, i think Dire Straits is mediocre at best, and i have never been moved in the slightest by the guitar work in any of their songs.

But then, music is a very personal thing. I love all the other guitarists mentioned in this thread.

The Man's Too Strong is also unreal.

His solo albums are excellent - Sailing to Philadelphia being a high water mark IMO.

Knopfler is subtle and sublime. A master of the instrument...

Give me Pink Floyd for sublime guitar work. :)

Gogar, no offense, but i view the song "sultans of swing" to be garbage 80s pop music. In fact, that's pretty much my view on the entire body of Dire Straits work.

Not trying to hate, i just don't feel ANYTHING like the feeling i get when i hear any of the other named masters in this thread play guitar. To be totally honest, when i hear dire straits the only thing i feel is a desire to change the radio station.

This is all very subjective though, i've heard people rag on Jimmy Page in the past, which is totally beyond me. He's my #1 all time great.

70s actually. And yes, they call Gilmour God's guitar player.

Find some guitar players and ask them. You will find words like taste, tone, restraint used in regard to Knopfler.
