Dean's Last Drive in the 550 Spyder
I guess I was obsessed with Porsches even in college - I saved a Motor Trend devoted mostly to Porsches that I purchase at my college bookstore in 1985. I thought you might like this read:

He never "cruised through Hollywood in his new silver 550". They picked-up the brand new car at the old Hollywood Sports Cars on Vine and immediately put it on a trailer heading north to Salinas for a race. He pulled it off the trailer to drive it on the highway as soon as they got up north out of town, mostly to break it in but also because he just wanted to drive the thing.
He was hauling ass and got killed when someone turned into his path on a two-lane highway. It's an extremely well-documented story, (over-documented if you ask me), he was a major gearhead and racing fanatic whose acting career was exploding at the time. This had the dual effect of making auto racing affordable at any level but also completely eliminating his spare time away from working for the present time. He had been shooting "Giant" non-stop until the day of the Salinas race, got some sleep and went down to pick-up the car and head north. He never made it. He never got to enjoy the car. That's a pretty big piece of sloppy writing.

Something about that car and the James' accident has always fascinated me.

There is an interesting thread here regarding the whereabouts of the 550 wreckage. Kind of like the King of the Hill RSR thread - someone asked about the remains of the car, and some guy comes out of the woodwork with some interesting history.

Weird, how timing in an accident like this can just be all bad.
When just a few seconds faster or slower can change everything. |

George Barris, the custom hot rod guy had the car for a short time. He thought it was cursed.

I did not mean to demean your post and apologize if I came off snooty. I did not have time to read the article, (plus know the story already), and just saw that very incorrect quote in bold about Dean tooling around Hollywood in that car. The actual true story of his life and passion for acting and cars/bikes/racing is a good one. ![]()
