it's been nice knowing you all

well, Prince (the artist formerly known as a symbol, formerly known as Prince) has declared the internet is over, so i guess i won't be able to be on Pelican anymore - it's been nice knowing you all

nostatic 07-10-2010 08:51 PM

nonsense, the interwebs isn't going anywhere. Prince is just full of himself, and he is just showing his confusion about how techn

crustychief 07-10-2010 08:58 PM

Good one.

speeder 07-10-2010 10:46 PM

One of these days, I'll scan a picture of him from our HS yearbook and post it here. Strange man but then geniuses are a rare breed so slack is granted.

pete3799 07-11-2010 03:21 AM

Prince was formerly known as a genius?

Porsche-O-Phile 07-11-2010 03:58 AM

Prince was formerly known as sane?

Still is, by anyone with musical knowledge. What have you created in your life, Pete?

mattdavis11 07-11-2010 06:24 AM

I'm curious to know what he/she/it has done that I'd miss?

Porsche-O-Phile 07-11-2010 06:47 AM

Weird <> Artistic

I wouldn't trade my life for his that's for sure.
I've been making music for 45+ years and he hasn't impressed me yet.

Nobody asked whether you wanted to trade your life for his. He grew up about as much of an outsider as one could be in one of the tougher ghettos in America. Think about his physical stature and appearance for a minute, plus pretty white-looking in North Mpls. in the '60s and '70s.

Freaks and geniuses are not known for their happy/normal lives, generally speaking. Though he has definitely done it "his way" and been more successful than you if we gave you ten tries, instead of one life.

I think it's safe to say that if we assembled the 20, (or 50 or 100), people considered to be the most talented living musicians, not one would concur or agree with your assessment of him. He was the youngest producer ever signed by a major record label. He came out of absolutely nowhere in a time before the internet and Warner Bros. gave him the $$ to produce an album where he wrote every song, played every instrument and was the sole performer. He was 18 years old and very odd-looking, fitting into no existing genre at the time. The album was a huge hit. He went on to produce many more, each one bigger than the last.

His compositions have been made into hit records by several other major artists, as well as performed by world-reknown symphony orchestras. He wrote, produced, directed and starred in a motion picture about his life. Not exactly Citizen Kane by any means but it was a massive success and made him $50M in one year. (1984 dollars). Not bad for a bi-racial dwarf from the 'hood.

Stevie Wonder, Quincy Jones, the Marsallis brothers, countless rockers and music fans around the world consider him brilliant. Pete from the Pelican board is not impressed.

Hokay...

I guess it's because of my limited knowledge of music that I have never spent a dime on anything "formerly known as" had or will have to offer.
Of maybe I have taste.

Detour ahead!

I'm curious why you chose "<>" to represent "does not equal"?

Most non-programming people will use "≠".

In the programming world, many languages use "<>", and many languages use "!=". Just curious.

...

As to Prince, yes, I think he's a musical genius. Or at least was. He hasn't done much of note in the past 20 years.

If it did, you could be artistic. You're plenty weird.

Prince is one of the greatest musicians of our time, no green font necessary.

nostatic 07-11-2010 08:22 AM

What is interesting about his comment is that Prince was ahead of the curve with online distribution - he was messing around with that back in the 90's. My guess is that he's seeing a couple of phenomenon that give him pause. One is the fact that for distribution in a lot of ways only the middle man has changed. The other is that one could argue that social networks taken to their extreme over saturate the market and turn people into even shorter attention span creatures.

Or maybe I'm projecting :D

I'm in the Prince = genius camp. No, I don't care for everything he's done. But he's a "total musician" in the footsteps of Stevie Wonder (playing all instruments on albums), he had vision, and the balls to do it his way.

asphaltgambler 07-11-2010 09:32 AM

I think the real point that Prince is missing is that MTV ls just a program via TELEVISION which is the medium/carrier - where the web is the medium; not a program

Whether I care for everything he's done has no relevance. I don't care for anything that some great writers have done. My preferences have nothing to do with their genius.

I flew Prince, or whatever his name is, was or is going to be.

Of all the celebs that I have flown or known over the years, he is the strangest one I have ever met. Am guessing that the doctors dropped him on his head during delivery.

Our entire flight crew were blown away about some of the strange things that this person did, both during and after the flight. Cannot go into them but suffice to say that boy and some of his group are very, very weird....
