Best digital camera for under $200?

Time to leave my beater Nikon Coolpix 4300 at home on this next trip to Europe. What to get? I want 10+ megapixels and a large zoom feature. Though my main complaint with my 4300 is the ridiculous lag time between pressing the button and when it actually shoots. Missed some real good ones because of that. Suggestions, anyone?

Here's a site to look at a lot of cameras in ! spot( alphabetically) Digital Cameras ...I think a lot of lag time( annoying as hell) is going to be in any sub 200$ point and shoot..... http://www.dpreview.com/ is a good review site.....

I just bought a Sony DSC-H55. 14.1 mp, shoots 720p @ 30fps as well. $199.

I love the Canon SX series. Cheap, manual iso, flash, f-stop, shutter speed and zoom controls, but still easy to use if necessary with the smart modes. The lense and light capturing area is large, giving you great night time abilities. Plus they come with a 10x zoom and lots of different megapixel options. For $160-200 you should be able to get the xs120, which is 10 megapixel. Of course, the best feature is that they run on two AA's... no rechargeable bs. Mine has taken hundreds of pictures, maybe even 1,000, on the same lithium energizers. I don't use flash very often though.

I think I've settled on a Panasonic Lumix FH20 if I can find it for the right price. But there are just so many out there. Seems like the FH20 gets great reviews by everyone. The others have a lot of lovers and haters.

I'm curious to see what you think of the Lumix rick... I've considered one if I get to go back to philmont next year.... Don't really want to lug a dSLR around in my pack...

When I told my wife why I wanted the Lumix, she said I should just learn how to take good pictures and buy a DSLR. I told her if she wanted to carry it everywhere in Europe, I was fine with that. She didn't like that.

I love the pictures my DSLR takes.... Its just a beeotch to carry... I sure wouldn't want it on vacation...

(Get the Canon. Best camera I have ever had.)

TGTIW 07-11-2010 05:21 PM

I looked at the Lumix as well, what put me off was the inability to zoom while shooting video.

Nikon makes a decent point-and shoot digital 12mega pix camera for around $200.

I have an older Coolpix and love it!

My next camera will be a Nikon DSLR - probably the D3000 or D5000.

Carrying a DSLR is no problem... I recently returned from a 4 week trip to China..

I had my DSLR on my person every day..

get one of these straps..

BlackRapid.com

Camera is always at the ready... and at hand... and inconspicuous while walking around.

So many camera have good sensors... get a cam with good glass

(They are lying. They want you to get the Canon.)

I have a Sony 12.1 megapixel DSC-W190. It takes absolutely stunning pix for it's price point IMO. It was about $200 including the tax, IIRC. I've had it about 8 months, i really love it, and have discovered that i really love photography too.

Here are a few sample pix i've taken with it:
