Build the engine for your new Z06 or ZR1 yourself!
I apologize if this has already been posted....
According to this article Corvette Z06 & ZR1 buyers will soon be able build the engine for their new cars themselves! Seriously. How cool is that? $6k for anyone spending $70-100k for a new car is nothing. I imagine a lot of buyers will pay that for the right to brag to their buddies that they built the engine in their new Vette themselves. And they will even have a personalized nameplate to prove it! I think this is a great idea. Check it out. Buy a Corvette, build the engine yourself - Jul. 12, 2010 |
Cool idea except I wonder what the warranty implications are... It'd be really neat to get a chance to do this.
Rather brilliant move by the UAW - now they can do even less and charge more! :p |
Last winter I stumbled upon a TV show that showed how they built these engines. One person builds the whole engine. It was pretty cool watching them build the amazing engines.
I wonder how much longer it takes a "customer" to build an engine than the "regular" engine builder. I am sure the professional engine builder is quite a bit faster. I realize they will be supervising/assisting, but I still bet it takes a lot longer. I agree about the warranty. Maybe it actually reduces warranty expense -- Chevy can blame the customer for any engine problems! Actually, I am sure they will be well supervised & the engines will be tested before installation in the car. I am anxious to see how popular this option is. Maybe we can get Porsche to offer a similar program. |
This is pure marketing genius.

Can I have Obama build mine?
|
Read the article. You need to fly to the factory. The build is supervised. Warranty is the same.

Imagine being able to assemble our sweet 6's |
So you have to pay an additional $6k to build part of the car yourself? Doesn't that seem a little backwards to anyone?
Oh well, marketing at work. |
You can pay extra to pick up your Porsche in Germany.
$6,000 for lifetime bragging rights... |

Just buy a low mileage C5 or C6 Z06 and pull the engine - 6k in upgrades combined with the savings of buying a lightly used car will get you as fast as you need. Bragging rights included. I doubt there will be a lot of takers, but who knows!?

I don't disagree - C5s in particular are dirt-cheap now. I looked at one recently just for yuks that was at a local dealership, they only wanted $12k for it. Not in bad shape either and no major issues.
|
This is almost as dumb as the club sport boxster that deletes everything and adds $6k to the price tag...

Don't give 'em any ideas...

I drove a rented Hertz ZX(?) - supposedly 450 HP. The car was tremendous.
|
$6K sounds like an amount they would set aside for warranty reserve...

Factory LS7 builder. " Hey hand me that rod bolt" Don't touch that and please sit down. OK I need the valve cover, bring it here" Hey get us a drink, coke please the machine is on the other end of the building.
Car owner " Yup, I built that motor myself. at the factory. " |
Remember the UAW guy who's job your taking is standing right behind you. :D That's where the $6000 goes.

Brilliant idea!! In fact, just saw the "amzaing factories" show, or whatever its called, the other night, and it was all about the Z06 builds. Pretty remarkable processes. IIRC, they let the "tv host" help in assembling part of the motor too. Think they will let you swap out the stock seats for some Sparcos while you are there? ;)
