A few pictures from the Ardennes.

Just spent a mid-week in the Ardennes, lots of snow and xcountry skiing. These are taken just a few miles from Malmedy, just to the East of Bastogne.

Funny that you said that. Those were my thoughts exactly when I was there for the Spa GP-that part of Belgium has an uncanny resemblance to central Pa.

Pa is an absolutely gorgeous state once you get outside the cities.

Those pretty pics would bring a few tears and a few more nightmares to more than a few (though less every day) .

For some reason that fourth one sends shivers down my spine - and not because it looks cold.

There was a little bakery in Malmedy that I loved to visit. I lived in Bitburg and would drive into Belgium on the weekends. St. Vith, Malmedy, and Bastogne were some of my favorite places to visit.

I spent many hours trying to find a ME-109 that went down in the woods west of St, Vith... Never found it.

Care to explain, you made me curious.

A few miles from where we stayed is a village called Baugnez, site of the Malmedy Massacre. There is a small memorial and a brandnew private museum. Very well done. On the second floor they had an engine displayed of a Me-110 which was dug-up in 2007. There's still plenty of metal in the ground and trees.
The owner of the place we rented said that complete parts of forests are left untouched because of the amount of scrapnel in the wood.

A few more pictures I took when driving back home. Neuville/Ardennes American War Cemetary. Of the almost 6000 graves, eleven contain two brothers KIA.

I think the latest pics you posted explain it well enough.
My Uncle wore the patch at the bottom left of that monument . As did a very good friend of mine who died last spring.
And another old man at the grocery store a couple weeks ago who once was young was wearing a worn black vets cap with THIRD ARMY in front , a staff sgts. patch and campaign names on the sides. I approached and thanked him as I always do those who served.

God bless them.

If you are referring to the field - just the feeling I get looking at it knowing what went on around there. I have no special knowledge of it.

I don't know how I missed this thread originally. Love the area. We visited Henri Chappel and were very humbled. This photo from Kris is one of the all time best:

Thanks very much for posting Kris.

Its really a beautiful area. First time there was in 1969 when I toured Normandy then went inland following the invasion route.

Whoa, I was born in 69.

And a few from the Orval brewery. Very peaceful setting and quite the beer.

The actual brewery part of the monastery.

Dog was more interested in the sheep.

I've driving from Paris to Cologne in September, but will be on a tight schedule. I know it's only 4-5 hrs., but are there any good WWI sights pretty close to the hwy. along that route?
