Says the man who has a 2000 dollar coffee maker and 2 BBQ's that cost as much.

Having lived in Las Vegas for one year, I can see why one from there might think green as unusual except where it costs $200 for 18 holes.

Typical.

I think it looks fantastic. Good job!

I have a Bermuda lawn and I over fertilized it too early in the season this year and I am struggling to recover. I think I am going to re-sod one side with something a little more shade tolerant and I have considered Zoysia but I am also thinking about fescue. I have some drainage issues to fix and think I am going to build a little retaining wall to reduce the slope of the lawn.

Lawns are great where you have rain. In SoCal we have reached the critical point where lawns are not a great idea any longer. In fact, a real green lawn in SoCal stands out not favorably.

So, if you can have a super lawn and not feel guilty about it, mow for it.

I hate lawns. What a waste of time and energy.

I spend $$$ watering, clipping it, mowing it, etc.
Then I get to chuck all of that stuff out.....
Plus it sucks up my time on the weekends.

I think its insane that people spend all of that time and energy on it, then you can't walk on it. What the hell is it for. This ludicrousness has to stop.

I cannot wait until it becomes socially irresponsible to maintain your yard! The only reason we have one is for our dogs. I don't use it. What for? I don't grow food, I live in a suburb so it's not like its good for hunting or skeet shooting, etc. It serves NO purpose other than a maintenance headache, a dog restroom and a divider from the neighbors.

If aliens came to earth and saw the amount of time we waste on it, then to simply toss the clippings away (that we spent all this time nurturing, protecting and helping grow) they would think we were mental.

Flame away, but I think the modern yard is a waste.

So, whats the best grass to use in Georgia that is shade tolerant? I have over half of my yard that dont ever see sunlight and the parts that do, burn and turn brown, even when watered alot. i ve tried a few different types over the years, but it seems every 2-3 years, im redoing the whole yard again..

Tell me more about putting the sand down. I never would have considered putting sand on grass.

I have some rough patches in areas that I'd like to have auto-magically flatten out. I've tried to dump topsoil on it and leveling. Anytime I do that though, the rain comes before the grass can grow, and washes the fresh dirt away, leaving the original divot.

We use sand as a top dressing alot here for southern turfgrasses. In our area it helps drainage and root growth in our heavy clay based soils particularly after aerating. Plus sand will quickly fill in low spots and sod seams. Be carefull, however, river sand is loaded with weed seeds that will invade even after using pre-emergent weed control agents (ask me how I know). This time I picked up some mason's sand that the landscape supply house assured me does not have seeds like river sand (we'll see)

I tend to disagree. My kids play and swim in it, the dog enjoys it, the pond attracts quite some wildkife and we simply enjoy sitting outside for breakfast etc. I agree that gardens which you cannot get into because you would damage the grass are a bit odd. I need an hour of maintenance per week, the boys cut the lawn with a tractor.

As stated, washed masonry sand, the kind brick masons use to mix their mortar is used to fill in the low spots. You sling it into the low spot with a shovel. Let the grass grow up through it, and repeat if necessary. (Build up the low spot over time.)
This is a golf course trick used for leveling imperfections.

Mthomas, and Garp. Great looking lawns, both of you.

We've had success with fescue in a relatively small shady area near the garage. Planted it in the fall a coupla years ago, and was super thick for awhile... it's done pretty well since then, but thinned out some, and parts of it need to be reseeded... fescue grows in clumps and doesn't spread the way centipede does.
