Ruger or Remington?
 

I have a (new in the box/never fired) Ruger Mk II 50th anniversary pistol that I am considering swapping for a (new) Remington 1911 R1 semi-auto. Keeping in mind that I paid $200 for the MkII in 1999 and the Remington pistol is $600, which would you want? A gun safe queen or a shooting/carring piece?

Even swap I would take the one I could shoot.

You're asking if you should trade a $200 gun for a $600 gun?

Actually, the MKIIs are going for about $550 now so the issue is not value, but purpose. Since I have other .45 pistols (Sig 220, etc.), I guess the question is which one do I want? The Ruger is a good long term investment, but I've always liked the 1911 style pistol. An old worn out 1911 was the first centerfire handgun that I learned to shoot with when I was in the Navy. The Remington R1 is a well made but very basic 1911 without any fancy add ons so it is very much like a 1911A1.

Everyone needs at least one good 22 pistol - and a good 45. You've already got the 45 covered with the SIG, etc. so I'd say sell the safe queen Mk II and buy a nice used shooter Mk II and lots of mags or a Browning Buckmark and lots of mags.

U got to be jokin....a Ruger a safe queen...take the beotch out and shoot it...50th aniverisary , 200th year of our nation....exactly how many of those things do you think they produced?

And why the fk would you want the Remigton?

Or sell the Ruger to a fool and buy a nice used one you can shoot...pocket the rest of the money to buy a real 1911.

I don't believe in safe or garage queens.... I wring the **** out of my 944 and I'm not afraid to get my first round Belgian A5 out of the safe and go shoot it....

The remington 1911s are nothing special at all. It's, unless i'm mistaken, a straight GI model that'll need about $1000 in work to get it to where most 1911 type people would want it to be.

On the other hand, the MkII is going up in value, while the Rem will never go up in value, ever.

The anniversary Ruger is about the most undesirable version they make from a shooting standpoint. They came with a real short tapered barrel. The 5"-7" bull and slab sided versions are much nicer for plinking or target shooting.

The Remington R1 is a cast frame which makes them less desireable, at least to me.

Good thoughts all. Just for the record, my .22 shooters are a 2nd model Colt Woodsman Match Target and a bull barrel S&W model 41. Also have a 40+ year old Ruger single six with adjustable sights.

I had no idea Remington was making pistols again, good for them.

If you already have a 22 target pistol, it is a no brainer to me. Get the 1911.

I have a Colt 1991, which looks to be similar, a bare-bones GI type 1911, and it worked just fine as delivered. I shot USPSA with it for a year before doing anything to it, and I only modified it because I won a gift certificate and some parts in a drawing after a big match. I ended up getting a high beavertail safety, a good trigger, commander hammer, and a nice beveled mag well for a couple hundred bucks worth of labor.

A used 1911 Springfield Armory Champion would be a better platform, and cost less.
