dometic fridg 2 way

I have afridge that does not work in a travel trailer. any hints as to what to look for? It isdometic model rm2852 and does not cool though no fault codes. worth getting the reman cooling unit or just forget the fridge all together and get a dorm fridge to put in its place

I'd say it depends on how much you need one that runs on gas. If you do, check with a RV place, a big outfit like camping world or simmilar should have a variety of choices. If you really don't need the 2-way capability, go to best buy.

How old is it?

Ours started not cooling for some reason. I found if I put a couple of freezer packs in the freezer section of the fridge when I turned it on, it would work just fine.

1999 though it gets hot on the cooling fins though I think thats the defrost feature

If you smell ammonia around it then the cooling unit is done. Sometimes if you take it out and turn it upside down for 24 hours and then turn it right side up for 24 hours before lighting it, you can get lucky. Check out this site.

I don't smell anything though I do see a yellowish stain in a few spots. Great looks like it needs cooling unit or just a new fridge.

maybe not - could be the vents, etc. - people clean them out; sometimes blow compressed air thru them or use a shopvac

1st thing to do is to run the stove then try lighting the fridge

does yours work on AC and on DC battery power? If so, test it on those to isolate the issue

there are a ton of posts on TheSamba Vanagon forum on these things - the posts are a bit 'disconnected' but the info is out there if you can assemble it

this is an auto version so it wll switch back and forth depending on if it is on shore power or not. The back heats up on both ac/ and gas so I am guessing that its the cooling unit which cheapest I found was $480 plus shipping remanufactured.. I am quickly thinking the best route is the dorm fridge.

I know many have replaced the Dometic in their Vanagons with a thing called a "Truckfridge" - may be a brand name.

I'd try cleaning the vents and inlet pipes before laying out some bucks

No moving parts, except maybe a fan. I'd do what Randy and Crusty said, clean out the fins and turn it upside down for 24 hr.

Try the freezer packs in the freezer section of the fridge. Mine is a dometric as well, and it worked wonders on it. I am not sure if it was the gas thermostat or what. I did all the research you did it sounds like and like you, I didn't want to spend the $$ to fix something I wasn't positive was the problem.
