Buddy gave me his Acer netbook-
aspire one. I don't have the password. How do I bypass? thanks. KT

Insert rescue CD. Reboot computer. When it starts back up and asks if it should boot from the CD, take the "yes" answer and proceed to format and reload the OS.
That gets you to a fresh installation and like Dave said, hope its not a HD password...

On startup... Boot in safe mode.... Then go in and remove the password on the account...

I'd recommend wiping it and reinstalling an OS anyways...
I've got 4 of 'em at work we use for check out purposes (travelign faculty, etc) and I put Ubuntu Netbook Remix on them - works fantastic.

Put a new BIOS in the MB or get another computer.
