Wayne - Why are you tracking IP's now?

I just noticed a little icon below the post that show everyone's IP. I know that the internet is a public forum, but I would think showing someone elses IP would be considered not cool.

Now I know where to launch the bots :D

What say you?....

Hmmm I don't see them in this forum, but I did in the Cayenne forum, the plot thickens....

Gogar 07-20-2010 06:52 PM

I think they always track ips, so they can ban ips as opposed to usernames. I don't know about displaying them though!

porsche4life 07-20-2010 06:55 PM

Plotting to get rid of Cayenne Owners?

I don't see any Ips on posts....

masraum 07-20-2010 06:56 PM

Tracking ips isn't that big a deal really. They can't normally be traced to anything useful. These days anyone on the nnet should have a firewall and some sort of security. IPs are almost always dynamic, and many, most devices are probably behind some sort of router that's doing NAT. If someone like a LE agency wants to track something down, they can request (I assume by court order) login and/or MAC address info from the service provider.

Yeah, if someone really wanted to be a dick, they could probably attack someone based upon the ip if the work soon after a post.

Very interesting. Where exactly is my IP displayed? It may not be much but I'd like to know about the changes.

My "dynamic" IP address only changes if my router turns off and then not always, needs to be off for a few minutes vs a reboot.

Has not changed in at least 7-8 months.

I work on several other bulletin boards as an admin or moderator. We track IP addresses there on everyone of them for a very good reason.

You would not believe all the spammers we get who try to fake their name, address, location and so on. Run the IP address and it usually will come up China, Russia, India and so on.

While you can spoof the IP address, most do not and it gives you a good idea who and where the post is coming from.

My question is there any IP's that are interesting?
I am wondering if one can track the Lurkers?

red-beard 07-21-2010 03:20 PM

Lurrrrk. Lurrrrk. Lurrrrk.

With access to the moderator control panel, you can do a lot. How much is what you get to figure out! :)

Mine too, except that I'm on 3-5 years with my current IP.

porsche4life 07-21-2010 04:26 PM

My IP has to screw with them...... I frequently use my laptop in 3 different places.... School, my apartment, and my parents house....

porsche4life 07-21-2010 04:40 PM

Typical attention whore girls....

stomachmonkey 07-21-2010 04:50 PM

Oops. Thought I posted on wrong thread and deleted it only to realize i was right to begin with

stealthn 07-21-2010 07:08 PM

Steve, DoS is your friend ;D

I only saw it in the cayenne forum, and I guess it's for spammers, but mine own IP doesn't have to be public. I prefer stealth....

Web servers always log requestors' IP addresses, unless the admin disables that logging deliberately. Also, Wayne has this board wired-up to Google Analytics which is tracking all activity in detail and trending it over time.

I have not seen the IP's displayed visibly on the board though.
