back in the whaling days (when we used to get our oil supply by killing these mammals), it was common for sperm whales to attack ships or boats

IIRC, they sometimes breached on top of them instead of biting

no idea re other whales, but imagine that baleen whales would be less likely to do this

I heard an old Porsche factory mechanic say the best transmission oil for a 356 or 901 transmission was based on whale oil. It took several years before a decent replacement was made.

Nye Lubricants began their biz hundred fitty years ago doing the whale oil thing. They are now a true powerhouse in the field of specialty lubes - they do exotic stuff, the kind of oil that lubricates disc drives and watches, satellites and rear-view mirrors; lube-for-life stuff.

I don't think I would use whale oil to lube a gearbox though...not unless I wanted to work on it at an inflated price!
