Help! Need CPU Assistance...

I am currently in safe mode.... turned on CPU today and it would only stay on the windows screen with the little time bar running.... would not load windows...

I tried to go in with last known good setting and no go.... had to go in with safe mode...

only thing I know that happened yesterday was a firefox update....

already updated malwarebytes and ran check... no malicious hits....

any ideas? thanks in advance....

Which OS (Vista, XP or ??) would help...

Hope you have backed up your data...

I am running XP... I really don't have much data on my CPU, I can get all my photos off and onto a CD if need be, but I am figuring that this is a possible Firefox issue...

I have already done an msconfig and found that normal startup is checked and I did a system restore to two days ago and this did not resolve the issue....

Well, I got it to work in normal mode.... I had to do a system restore back to the beginning of the month... this put me back on firefox 3.6.6 instead of 3.6.7 working fine now... any ideas gurus???

Personally, being a professional, I'd check the HD to make sure it's okay. Standard procedure for me, take clients pc, test HD, ghost HD (backup), fix....

Hey Dave, I did a chkdsk everything seemed to come back okay....

Not a chkdsk, but actually get the SW from a drive co... I like to use the Drive Fitness Test (DFT) from Hitachi. It's good at detecting problems on all HD's.

I'm not saying your HD is bad, but you never know. Chkdsk doesn't always find bad sectors.

Thanks Dave, will give it a shot!

But it really sounds like a software conflict related to FF - which can be hard to track down. I had a laptop that would freeze & crash in some locations & not others. The end result: the wireless card drivers were old & it froze as the wireless card tried to load. But this only happened at 2 hotels out of 25 . . .

Hey Ian... I am guessing that is what type of issue that I am having... I am always having weird happenings when FF updates....

imcarthur 07-25-2010 03:35 PM

And when I suggested Chrome, I was only half joking:

Here's how the browsers fared, in sum total:

Chrome (stable): 22
Chrome (dev): 20
Firefox: 18
Opera: 20
Safari: 14
Internet Explorer: 9

from: Lifehacker

I went from IE to Chrome. I used FF for a couple of weeks, but prefer Chrome.
