I've hurt myself

Really messed myself up this time. I was playing softball Thursday in a mens league and went sliding into third. The third baseman landed on my ankle as I was sliding and this is the result. It was pretty gruesome looking at the time because it was dislocated and twisted around pretty bad. My sis took some pics but I will leave those out because to tell the truth, I don't even want to see them again. It was very very painful and I came close to losing consciousness from the pain alone. I ended up breaking my lateral and medial maleolli. Basically I snapped my inner and outer ankle bones completely off. This could not have come at a worse time because I was scheduled to move and start a new job Monday Aug 2. The pain is manageable most of the time with the medication I am on, other times nothing touches it. Not really sure how things are going to work out but I am trying to stay positive. Sometimes things happen for a reason and without telling whole story, I was in the beginning stages of a potentially serious relationship with a very special girl. Postponing my move may give us the extra time to cultivate that (even though I am pretty useless at the moment). It may just be all worth it. :)

That is just nasty!
I am glad that you didn't post the pictures.
I read somewhere that slow pitch/softball has one of the highest injury occurrences than any other recreational sport.
Hope you are feeling better soon and get a grip on the pain. What did they give you for pain killers? Perhaps it isn't enough.
Edit: Make sure you keep up with the pain killers and the interval between them. You get behind and it will certainly let you know!

Wow, good luck. Nursing that sort of injury back to 100% sucks. At least you've got the special girl to help with the process.

looks like they used dry wall screws?

Seriously!

My grandfather just had to have screws put in his C1 and C2 neck/back bones. YIKES - he's 88!

If they're titanium.... $200 a piece!

Well they were when I was working in the health industry 15 years ago.
The ones they used in our hospital were made in Germany.

Nowadays... Who knows? Probably Taiwan.

Get better soon. :)

I was on morphine at the hospital and was switched to Percocet and sent home with that. It wasnt cutting it so am now on Dilaudid. It works most of the time but it takes over an hour to kick in and doesnt at all, it seems, when I've eaten anything substantial. It very hard to time everything and stay relatively pain free.

$200 a peice for screws?! I'm going to ask for them back and build something really sweet and expensive.

vash 07-26-2010 07:02 AM

OUCH!!!

i kept the stainless steel rod from my tib/fib break. sorta a good luck charm for me.
are those screws going to stay for life?

docs, do they use a regular drill driver? no way, right?

craigster59 07-26-2010 07:11 AM

Been there done that. It sucks but you'll be back in a month or 2. I dislocated my foot the same way except it was sliding into 2nd. Right foot was twisted and pointing off to the side, hurt like hell but nothing compared to the pain when the hardware was put in. Best of luck and get well soon!

nostatic 07-26-2010 08:10 AM

Good luck flying. You might as well buy a nice shemagh :p

Looks painful, at best. On the plus side you can tell everyone you're even better than Iron Man--you're TITANIUM MAN!

Next time, if there is one, use snipes tuck and roll method. just kidding hope it doesn't affect the new job but just remember "chicks dig sympathy sticks" thats what we call crutches north of the 49th

m21sniper 07-26-2010 01:08 PM

Hope ya feel better soon. Now go get some hot chicks to sign your cast. :)

pete3799 07-26-2010 04:22 PM

Man thats a bummer. Hope your good as new soon.
Those screws aren't Dilivar I hope.

chapo 07-26-2010 04:34 PM

Our whole B-League city basketball team just retired because of things like that. I am the youngest on the team at 41, playing kids sometimes in their teens. We had a hard time the last few seasons making all ten games because of injuries.

Icemaster 07-26-2010 05:19 PM

You just made my balls crawl up around my kidneys from the memories. You have my deepest sympathies.

I did something similar playing hockey 15+ years ago. Almost the same kid of plate and screws were installed, I had them taken out about 10 years later.

The pain was harsh for about the first two weeks, then tapered off to be manageble with just aspirin. Keep it elevated, that will reduce the throbbing. Stick with the PT when you get mobile again.

Are you in a cast or just a wrap?

williecoyote 07-27-2010 06:28 PM

That is a nasty injury you have there.
I wish you a full and speedy recovery.

JavaBrewer 07-27-2010 09:40 PM

Good thing you're still young. At 45+ that sort of injury may never heal correctly. PT is key.

I was thinking Synthes Small Fragment Set. There are pneumatic and electric power tools, some are pretty freakin' cool. There are some with batteries, cords. You do the tap and the screw by hand.

Nice reduction, did a good job for you. Keep it elevated, use ice as much as is practical, do what they tell you. If you are taking a bunch of pain meds, which you should be, keep in mind that will turn your bowels to concrete, eat prunes or stool softener

Plate is likely to bother you, probably comes out, medial screws may never give you any trouble. You may also have done some damage to the talus, which is the bone between the two you broke. If that is the case, you may suffer premature arthritis.

Ask them to put zinc oxide on your skin before putting the cast on, if that did not already happen. Will itch less and skin will look less funky when it comes off. Do not stick a coathanger down your cast. If it itches, tap on it with a wood kitchen spoon, drumstick, whatever, it helps.

If you smoke, stop, right now at least until you are healed up. Sin peso on esta pied, no weight, do the range of motion stuff early as possible, when they take the cast off, move that thing, do clockwise and counter clockwise circles with your big toe, it will take a while but you should do well, be patient, because you are one.

rattlsnak 07-28-2010 09:42 PM

Tobra 07-28-2010 09:48 PM
