1966 Jag E type

My father in law recently passed away and left behind a 1966 Jaguar E type 4.2 coupe 2 seater 4 speed. It was shown at a local level and placed every time. It has been stored in his garage in Dallas Texas for the past 25-30 years, untouched. The car appears very very nice. It was repainted very well sometime in the past, I do not know when. The car does not roll, it has been sitting for 25-30 years, appears the brakes have seized. I have some pictures, will post a link later. Also have a large amount of parts for the same car, some NOS some used. How do I put a value on this car? I have contacted the local Jag club, but no luck getting anyone there to return calls. He also left behind a 1997 XK8 convertible as well, lots of parts for that too. Contact me for more info if you are interested. Will be in Dallas August 13-18.

Jim

I would be very interested in this car, I am on Martha's Vineyard and I am returning home on Weds. I can fly to Dallas when you are there and take a look at it. Send me a note if you determine what is it worth in it's present condition

Unless it was stored right, those carbs might be a bit of a mess. It probably was stored ri ght, but drain all the fuel anyway. Frozen brake can be easy or a nightmare PITA.

That is a beautiful car, I bet it is very fast and will be nice driver once you get it going, sounds like Marko is sportin' a semi already over it and I don't blame him. My dad had a silver roadster like that before I could drive, made a great sound. If you really want to go fast in a passenger vehicle, you want a closed car.

A '66 coupe in rust free, running condition will run from a low of around $25,000 to up to around $50,000 in restored condition.

Sorry, but well-restored these cars regularly sell for north of $100K. Convertibles for up to $150K.

I wouldn't say that's the norm.

Wow, beautiful car. My condolences on your and your wife's loss.

I hope the mouse dropping in the one picture isn't an omen of a nest somewhere in the car.

For those prices, you're looking at Concours quality cars. I see a lot of very nice convertibles around 60k and coupes around 45 popping up for sale around here.

I think it is for high-end restos. (I have been watching this market closely for a while.) Recently looked at a convertible 4.2 that sold for $175K.

In Europe prices are even higher for these cars.

You would be correct. Very few E-Types ever got close to this price and certainly not in todays economy.

I just passed on a 68 or 69 convertable E type for 15K. Fresh paint. Interior was worn. Ran like a top. It was a killer deal. I think your car is a better time machine. Brakes are no big deal but the parts are expensive. Carbs and fuel delivery system could be gummy. Again. No big deal.

Can you keep this? It is a beautiful car! The six cylinder E types are very special. Coupes don't have the top of market pricing that the convertables have but seem to be less seen. I have no ideas about production numbers.

Don't be discouraged by my deal mentioned above. It was the bottom of the market on a great day. There should be a bunch of Jag fans somewhere that can help you on this. When was looking at that convertable, I got the sense that most classic jag owners hire their work and really get hosed by the mechanics. These are still simple cars. If you are handy, do it yourself.

My dad bought a black one just like that just before I was born. He said he did it so I would have a nice ride home from the hospital.

Those carbs are easy to clean up. Most likely the rubber on the bottoms of the jets are hard. You need a Unisync to balance them, about $30. Mossmotors.com has all kinds of parts.

Hugh,

"Most likely?" How about 100% the three rubber diaphrams on the bottom of each carb are gone, as well as the rubber lines running from the tank to the pump and so on. Also the sediment bowl will be either full of crap or empty and need cleaning. The parts that Hugh is talking about get hard as a rock after a few years and leak fuel from them when the pump starts pumping.

This will be a pretty big project in many ways. All hyd items will need overhaul, clutch cylinder, all the brakes. All hoses and belts replaced. Fuel tank cleaned out, fuel lines purged, carbs overhauled. Also I would put a new fuel pump in, or overhaul the old one.

Its do-able, just will take a pretty fair amount of time. I am about 75% done with doing the very same thing on my Fathers 1969 XJ.

For reference, Little British Car Co in Michigan is cheaper than Moss, but still uses their catalog as the reference. I just ordered a waterpump and misc stuff for the TR4...saved some big with LBCO, vs Moss.

...Plus they always put Walker's Short Bread cookies in the box with your order. Great customer service....
