How to chamfer/debur steel?
After drilling a hole through steel, what is the best way to remove the excess steel on the edge of the hole?

a countersink leaves a nice chamfer
a de burring tool comes in handy Amazon.com: General Tool 482 Swivel Head Deburring Tool with Metal Handle: Home Improvement sometimes in a pinch you can carefully countersink/chamfer the hole with a larger drill

It depends on the application. I use everything from rt/bast files and sandpaper to the aforementioned deburring tool. Sometimes even wirebrush on a zizz wheel.

We have deburring tools, but the above works all the time in a pinch!

Single flute countersink:
![]() The burr knife in the link above works well, as will assorted files. |

Yup, my preference too. The multi flute, "chatterless"c sinks always seem to chatter and muck up a nice finish.

A counter sink or bigger drill is what I use on holes but you could also use a deburring tool:
![]() The little sharp, hard blade rotates and you just drag along the sharp edge of freshly machined or drill piece.

I use bigger drill bits, countersink tools, debur tools, sharpened triangle files, small jewlers files etc. Most often however if working at my drill press, I simply grab a larger drill bit chuck it in my second drill press and often just hold the part up against the rotating drill bit to lightly chamfer the hole.
This isn't rocket science and many methods will work depending on what you have handy at the moment.
