August 3rd - Finally turned on the A/C
Wow - what a mild summer. Finally ran the air yesterday for a few hours, but was still able to open up around 6pm. What a mild summer so far, but I'm not complaining. So Cal Edison probably isn't happy tho...

Wow, I've had mine on since April.
My car says 108 going down the highway in St. Louis about a half hour ago. |
It's not the heat, it's the Heat AND the Humidity...

I waited until about June 8th to turn mine on.

It is redonkulous here man - I'm in Socal too - down by the beach and the last two nights with my windows open I have had to turn on my bed heater. It's crazy. Normally I'm sweating it naked with the wife (grin) with no covers of any kind and all the windows open and possibly the house fan on. We don't have AC but right about now is the time of year we always say we wished we had it. Normally we have about 4 weeks, last two in July, first two in August where we could use some air. The rest of the year we would never need it.
|
I don't have any AC and really don't need it. I moved into this place in Sept last year and had maybe 3 or 4 days that I wanted to have the fan going. week ago I added blankets back onto the bed. Weird summer at the coast...

You are sweating within one minute. |
With the bicycling in this heat, I'm OK with sweating.
Going into the pool in about an hour... |
That is cool even by Santa Monica standards.
90 deg here in Upland. Low 60's/hi 50's at night. |
You didn't use it during that heat wave we had 2 or 3 weeks ago? Mine was pumping for sure! Now if only I had AC for the commute home.
|
It won't be that cool in Long Beach. For a coastal city, we get about the same temps as downtown Los Angeles while our neighboring beach cities are 10 degrees cooler. So today we were in the high 70's where normally we would be in the high 80's and even 90's.
I'm lovin' it, but it can't last. I see Sept as 90/100 all month. October too. |
Been in Santa Monica for almost a year, previously lived in west LA since 2002, was inland before that (Pasadena and Claremont) so I know all about the typical heat. This is the oddest summer I've seen in 47 years of SoCal living (subtract 1.5 years for SF/Berkeley). Our June Gloom is extending into August with no end in sight. We've had about 3 "high/normal" days so far where it got out of the 70's. But SM only gets hot (say 90) a few days out of the year, and in SoCal Sept is the hottest month so we've still got time. But it has been miserable beach weather so far. Right now it is reminding me of SF - 4pm, cloudy outside and in the 60's. Well, in SF it would probably be in the 50s this time of year with blowing fog :p
|
We have had over 20 days this summer in NW Ohio that were 90 or above. Kind of getting used to it now. Winter was pretty cold this year, so I guess it is payback time.

Milt, if you are right about the late summer thing, I am going to have a lot of tomatoes in October

Usually in Houston, it's possible to have the AC on in any particular month. It's not unusual for the temps in Dec or Jan to occasionally be in the 80s which feels very warm when the rest of the weather is in the 60s. I rarely have the house open. I wish I could do it more, but the humidity is usually the problem. |
When my New Orleans family visits they are always amazed when we open up the house in the early evening. Guess that's pretty rare down south!
|
I forgot I had AC. I took the baby to the park this morning and had to wear a light jacket! I am enjoying the relatively low utility bills though.
|
We run our AC a lot, but largely just because we don't get great circulation without it, even with some windows open. For example right now my weather station reads 63 outside and 78 inside.
It has been unusually mild so far this spring/summer - many days in the 70's or 80's and very few 90's or 100's (if any) so far. I don't mind one bit. It is a bit odd for this area though when some summertime mornings are so cool and damp that it's practically drizzling and I need wipers and headlights on the way to work... |
