Scrappers
Has anyone seen this show.
What a riot. Buncha Brooklyn mamalukes who make their living collecting metal from jobsites for the scrap value. Man I miss those accents. Darren appears to be moderately retarded. |
Did you make this up or is it really a TV program?
I'm at a loss as to what is on TV now a days. |

Seriously? Scrap metal?
I guess its somewhat related to the more interesting American Pickers on the History Channel. Couple of guys rummaging through midwestern barns for antiques and the occasional interesting vehicle. Tim |

Scrappers is more about the personal interactions of these guys. The job is secondary. They are nothing more than a bunch of guys who work their tails off to make a living. None of them were ever going to have been rocket scientists that's for sure. |
Anything is a television show now.
Too bad. |
Gotta love their tagline.
Grab life by the Junk! Ha! |

I watched Scrappers and was embarrassed as an Italian American from Brooklyn.
I am amazed at what passes for television. I watched the show just to see what it was about and was not surprised by what I saw. I have been in the construction plumbing business in Brooklyn for 35 years and have come across guys like these. They may not be educated or very smart but for the most part they have been hard workers. There are many young men who believe that being from Brooklyn means acting like a "mamaluke", which means "big dope" in southern Italian dialects. There is a culture of keeping the stereotype alive and well in Brooklyn, an "identity" if you will. I have a Brooklyn accent and in certain circles I am looked down upon. But when I show that I can hold my ground in a conversation regarding art, opera, science or any other subject it is then that people put the accent aside and say, "This guy is educated and well read". Don't get me wrong, when I get sufficiently angry my Brooklyn comes out.....yaknowwhataymean? These are hard working and simple knock around guys but my God, what you people west of New Jersey must really think everyone in Brooklyn is like them. Trust me, this is not the case! PS...........we make a lot of money selling our scrap copper and brass!! Enough to support my Porsche habit! Scrrappers, it's like a train wreck, you know you shouldn’t look but you do anyway. |

Now that Jersey Shore show, that's a different story. |
Stomachmonkey,
Embarrassed because of the way "others" will look at these guys as being a bunch of jerks. I have come across this quite a few times. I have done plenty of clean outs and know first hand what a day of hard work is, many a boiler removal. Agreed that these guys are hard working and don't ask for anything they don't earn. Stomach, I am glad that you feel the way you do. But I don't think the rest of the country understands the Brooklyn culture and never will. My shop is in Williamsburg/Greenpoint and the neighborhood has gone through changes, gentrification. People from the Midwest have settled in the neighborhood. They don't understand the way things work, hell; they step off the curb reading a book and don't look up to see if traffic is coming, that doesn’t work here, people do not yield to anyone. They are not from Brooklyn and never will be, but they look down on the locals. A few years ago my wife and I went to Italy to visit my family and to take a tour as my wife had never been there. While on the tour we had to introduce ourselves and give a little information about ourselves in order to get acquainted. I stood up and introduced myself and mentioned that we were from Brooklyn and was in the construction business in NYC. We had a couple from the south come over to me a dinner and asked if I was in the Maaafia because of whom I am what I did and where I came from. I told them yes, and to mind there business. Well, so much for having anyone want to sit at my table for dinner. Anyway, it's a just a feeling I get. I don't see the show helping the image, that's all. Jersey Shore, now that is a TV abortion. |

But it does not need to be derogatory. At least I hope not as my Sicilian step father called me that, a lot. |
