Spoons on a plane
 

I'm thinking Pelican case (or Starlight?) with fitted high-density polyethylene plus some Abloy Protecs.

This will be for a long spoon.

Anybody have a better solution?

For me Pelican 1750 is the way to go.

Regarding the lock, look at this just for the fun of it YouTube - ‪How to open Abloy Protec cylinder lock‬‎ plus I don't think that will fit the Pelican very good.

I have some MasterLock padlocks ... remember they MUST NOT be TSA complaint!!

i have traveled with multiple cameras and dive gear in pelican cases. you CANNOT go wrong with pelican products period. never a problem and i own quite a few different sizes. and yes ALL AIRLINES have the entire earths population of GORILLAS for their baggage crew.


you need a lock with 2 keys. DO NOT SHIP AMMO in same case. must be in separate case also locked.

all they do is CONFIRM spoon unloaded and YOU LOCK IT. they put tamper proof sticker on it and off ya go after checking in bags.


its really simple. just announce always prior to giving it to them that it is a firespoon.

get to the airport early...

Actually Abloy makes some very solid padlocks as well. If it takes a special tool on the end of a drill to open it without authorization, I don't think you can ask for much more.

How easy is it to defeat the hinges on a Pelican case?

listen............there IS NO FT KNOX of spoon cases. unless you have a fireproof/torch proof/unobtanium safe there is NO THEFT FREE gun safe either.


with a super sawzall/a torch/a 9-1/2" grinder with plenty of abrasive wheels, a die grinder there isnt too much out there that will stop bad guys from breaking into anything.


butttt.....................there is a catch.




since this airline theft/dope crap has been going on for quite awhile and its always the same STOOPID M.O.(dirty employees or cops), video cams have pretty much ruled the airports for quite some time now and theft is really way down. background checks blah blah have cleaned this behavior up.



the only place i worry about anything is the hotel. ie. items too big for their hotel safe which i imagine a long spoon would include.



other than that i would keep it on my person at all times. yeah i know its tough, but how bad are you in love w/yer spoon??????

I ask about the hinges only because I saw a Boyt case the other day. The seller said they're made at the same mfg facility as Pelican, but I have reason to disbelieve him. Anyway the hinges looked pretty damned flimsy--pretty sure I could yank the pins inside of 30 seconds with a only a Leatherman.

ya know the only thang "theftproof" is yer items with you standing there with a 1911 with a round in the pipe and the safety off.


then yer items are safe. very very safe.


another idea is to insure it for JUST this trip. couldnt cost much. what the hell.

i think SKB will insure the contents..for bow cases..$1500?

i have the TSB locks on mine. last time, i still had to stand there while some idiot that knows ZERO about firearms checked it over. it was hard to watch. some tiny man, trying to figure out if my M70 was indeed unloaded.. painful.

in his defense..the look on my face must have made him "move slower".

My $.02.......

Pelican is ok but STORM cases have better latches for a comparable price.

SKB is a waste of time for anything you really care about.
