I'm looking for a nice plinking spoon and came across a nice Savage for sale.

Thoughts??

Hot, accurate little round... poachers in my neck of the woods swear by them...

Buy a standard .22 and save a ton of money on ammo.

I have a Marlin in .22 mag and a Savage 93R in .17 HMR--both bolt-action.

IMO everyone needs a small-caliber bolt-action rifle. I prefer the Savage hands down. Get it in either .22 WMR or .17 HMR, but get a Savage.

As for the performance of the two rounds? .17 HMR is a laser-beam. It will do almost anything .22 WMR will do out to longer distances, except kill something relatively big in one shot (raccoon, etc.).

Go with the savage, I'd recommend the BTV model. I have two, a Mk II in 22lr and a 93 in 22 mag.

When I got the 22 mag, I almost got the 17hmr instead but ammo is 50% more for the HMR...

san carlos injun rez (proper) is/was placed right on the gila river. it is/was a HELL HOLE. no damn wonder geronimo and others wanted the hell outta there numerous times during their captivity. now its a captive of another sort meth. anyway the town area is a crap hole. but the northern part of the rez is an actual paradise for hunters. no pressure, wayy far enough away from metro areas and game has FLOURISHED! name the species and theres alot.


anyway the program is with my amigos here is to take a stuffed jackrabbit that has had radio control car parts surgically implanted in its innards. this makes the "waskally wabbit" go roundy roundy on its pedastal via remote control. next we take poor raped rabbit cassette and stuff it in a ghetto blaster at full volume.


you will not have time to crack a cerveza nor set up yer chair or lounge chair before critters are running into you. it works that well. its a HOOT and amazes everyone we have brought out.

anyway used to go out with .308's, .300 win mags, 30'06, .223's 30/30's .270's .243's etc.. well that got damn expensive and it was very very LOUD! the action here is fast and furious. name it: bobkittys,coons,foxes,yotes(the trickster),etc.


anyway we being the rocket scientists we are finally agreed that .22's were the hot poo ticket. tried that and were disappointed with results even with .22 mega mongo mcnasty cci stinger rounds and thar kuzzins from other mfgs. shooting 50 rds out of a ruger 10/22 50 rd mag just aint sporting even in our books!


finally we decided that .22 mag rounds may be better for (1) shot knockdown with correct shot placement. remember kritters aint just standing there they are all running for a meal ticket. so each and every shot is on the run usually.


the .22 mag WORKED PERFECT from 50-100yds away. very effective. like deadly effective (1) shot flop over and twitch around about 2 seconds and CROAK!


thats my story and im sticking to it.


just remember to get yer san carlos hunting license and yer 3 day varmint tag and yer golden. otherwise injuns will SCALP YOU!

These .17HMR - RimfireCentral.com Forums guys really know their .17HMRs.

I use and love this wood (gun in the middle) Sako .17HMR, the plastic one is .22LR, but after having used the .17 I've barely fired the .22. I've shot rabbits out to 200 meters and it has way more knock down power when shooting hares. Did I mention it's phenomenally accurate :)

I have both the savage .17 w/ accutrigger and a 22 WMR. I shoot groundhogs all the time. For a 0-150 yard shot the 17 is like a laser. the 22 mag is a heavier bullet so at 75+ yards I think it drops a bit. The 17 kills em D.E.A.D. right now. The 22 leaves em squirming for a while. I like em both and really the HMR & WMR ammo are about the same price. They both shoot like air guns.

IIRC correctly, they shoot more accurately when you don't clean the barrel.

.17 Jim? Yes, mine does. I cleaned it every 5 shots for break in, but quickly noticed it shot better dirty.

Yup, it's a .223.

For rabbits, it's the .22 up to 100 meters, the .17 to 200m and the .223 to 400m. Haha not that I've actually hit one at 400 but I sure gave one a fright.

CZ do really nice Mannlichers and all their stuff is much better value than a Sako.

CZ wood sucks though. I had a CZ full length in .243 but it was really plain Jane in the wood department. They don't look like the picture. I have a stock duplicator so I'm looking for a "mule" to copy and do my .17 savage with the rubber stock in full length. I've ordered one from Richards Microfit for my WMR and I think I will use it as the mule for the outside areas and then use my savage for the inletting.

A stock duplicator would be handy.
