So Cal/ Az guys I need help.
We used to go to the Parker Strip in the 70's and there was a floating bar on the AZ side about 5 miles down river from the damn, and maybe a few more farther south.
What's the name of it, and is it still there? Seems I heard the locals forced it out of business. I'm driving from Dallas to So Cal and I'm thinking of taking a side trip there for a beer or two. It's one of my favorite spots, I love the scenery there and the feel of the River and the Landscape. I'd love to go back for old times sake. Also, I've done I10 and I40 many times. I was thinking of dropping down from Flagstaff thru Sedona on the scenic route there, then over to Parker. Is that route something special? I love to drive out west ! |
This?
Roadrunner Floating Dock Bar & Restaurant 7000 Riverside Drive, Parker, AZ 85344-8653 (928) 667-4252 |
Flagstaff to Jerome and Sedona are worth the extra mileage.

When I've gone to Parker, I go through Wickenburg on 60 and then turn off at Hope onto 72 into Parker. I've take 95 down from I-40 at Needles and that's a pretty ride. But damn, it's hot out there. Much worse than Phoenix.
|
Geez, It's been hot in TX right now, about the same as Parker, so I think I can handle it. I'm looking forward to cooler temps in So Cal.
I think it is the Roadrunner, name change but pulled up a picture and it looks like the same place. I'm gonna make the effort as I say, for old times sake. and I like to get off the Interstates when I can. It's either that or detour thru Lauglin. Thanks for the help, I'm looking forward to the trip. |
From Flag, come down to 69 through Prescott. You'll get to do the White Spar twisties!
Just like a roller coaster. Goes to Yarnell and Congress. Ends up on 60 where Rick said. I live in Prescott, I get to play on these roads every weekend! |
I just finished a drive west with my daughter.
We spent most of the time off Interstates. From Amarillo we went through Clovis then took RT 60 to Socorro. Beautiful. We stayed the night in Socorro then took RT 60 to Show Low...we saw maybe one car every 20 minutes. We then headed off on RT 260 to Payson. Unbelievably scenic trip. We headed south from Payson but you could head north. |
I drove through Laughlin yesterday. Very hot there too. Where in SoCal are you headed? Much of it is hotter than Phoenix. It doesn't cool off until you get near Redlands. I rode my bike to LA and back three wks. ago. Man, Blythe was the worst. It's bad when you get back to Phoenix and think it's cool.

lol I'll be near the beach. My brother lives in Anaheim and my Mother lives in Solana Beach. I'll spend most of my time around Huntington Beach and Newport and La Jolla. My brother told me to bring a sweatshirt it's been cold there this year.
How's Laughlin doing? Is it on it's heels like the other Gambling cities? I was just in Reno and could see why Tab's is so depressed all the time... |
I was in La Jolla last week too. It was in the low 60's by day and chilly at night. Coastal CA is always a lot cooler than the desert by a lot. Laughlin is not the kind of place I'd make a trip to if it weren't on the way home from Vegas. I only take that route on weekends when Hoover Dam is backed up for miles with tourists. It's 30 miles farther, but I can do about 100 mph most of the route. The one time I foolishly took the Dam route home on a Sunday, I put the car in neutral and slowly rolled for miles from Boulder City. I can walk faster.
|
Seahawk, I can take 380 thru ruidoso and white sands to Socorro, pickup up 60 then west. What do you think? That way I'd take a decent route thru West Texas, which is usually the worst part of the trip.
|
Rick you get around !
I only think Laughlin for the Gambling and a cheap hotel if I want it. Didn't gamble a bit when I was in Reno, so the draw is not really there. |

I used to go to Parker back then, my boss, LB Penhall raced boats there and we had some good times. One of the bars was FOX's.
And yes, it's been cold and drizzly at the beach this "summer", cold and dreary. |
Sounds great to me! There is a great little cafe in Magdalena, NM (can't remember the name) that we stopped at for breakfast. Neat little town.
I'll post some pics later. Have fun:cool: Quote:

Two bars 5 Miles south of the dam on the Az side.
The old road Riverside Dr is closed just north of Sundance. First exit south of Buckskin go north on Riverside Dr. You are probably thinking of the Sundance Saloon. It is currently closed, has been for a while, I believe because of sewer issues but there are lots of stories why. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1281976586.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1281976669.jpg Fox's has been around for ever and they are still open. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1281976710.jpg |
Farther south Road Runner, Open but I don't know about in the 70's

Badenocks?
|
Badenoch's
Janice Herrick and her late husband Bill have been their since I think 1972. Badenoch's for Breakfast or Lunch 3 miles north of Parker. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1281979724.jpg |
I've done the sundance many times over the years, each one is a story of it's own.
Nowadays my river trips always end at the same place, Avi. halfway between Laughlin and needles. The hotel is relatively new but is about average, the casino is below average, the food is average, the employees and customer service is well below average(they hire native americans from the tribe and most of em don't give a crap), but the beach and launch ramp are outstanding. I love that place. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1281984755.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1281984765.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1281984785.jpg |
