THE YEAR IS 1910
This will boggle your mind, I know it did mine! ************ ********* *********** The year is 1910 One hundred years ago. What a difference a century makes! Here are some statistics for the Year 1910: ************ ********* ************ The average life expectancy for men was 47 years. Fuel for this car was sold in drug stores only. Only 14 percent of the homes had a bathtub. Only 8 percent of the homes had a telephone. There were only 8,000 cars and only 144 miles of paved roads. The average US worker made between $200 and $400 per year .. A competent accountant could expect to earn $2000 per year, A dentist $2,500 per year, a veterinarian between $1,500 and $4,000 per year, and a mechanical engineer about $5,000 per year. More than 95 percent of all births took place at HOME . Ninety percent of all Doctors had NO COLLEGE EDUCATION! Instead, they attended so-called medical schools, many of which Were condemned in the press AND the government as 'substandard.' Sugar cost four cents a pound. Eggs were fourteen cents a dozen. Marijuana, heroin, and morphine were all available over the counter at the local corner drugstores. Back then pharmacists said, 'Heroin clears the complexion, gives buoyancy to the mind, regulates the stomach and bowels, and is, in fact, a perfect guardian of health' ( Shocking? DUH! ) Eighteen percent of households had at least one full-time servant or domestic help .... There were about 230 reported murders in the ENTIRE U.S.A. ! Try to imagine what it may be like in another 100 years. IT STAGGERS THE MIND |

Lubemaster, Tabs predicted this.
Best, Tom |
If inflation averages ~3.5%/year, then the average worker made between $6K to $12K per year in today's dollars if I calculate correctly.

I'm rather comfortable in 2010, if I can make it to 2050 I am sure I will then make it to 2075!
|
I suspect a most - if not all - of those are urban legends, but I can't find a convenient link to debunk them at this time.
|
I'll bet deodorant was used by only a few even though it had been invented in the late 1800's. That's probably what killed everyone so early. :D

with rampant diarrhea, not only do you lose tons of fluid (dehydration), you lose tons of electrolytes and your bicarb. your pH gets all out of whack. enough of those things and you are dead.

I question a few of those also.
I found this at http://www.hersheypa.com/press_room/pdfs/2010/life_1910.pdf , no vouching for it's accuracy: What Was Life Like in 1910? UNITED STATES ECONOMY A first class stamp cost 2 cents. A pound of sugar cost 5 cents. A Hershey bar cost 5 cents. A dozen eggs cost 34 cents. The average annual household income was $750. The federal government spent $.8 billion. Unemployment was at 5.9 percent. LIFE IN THE UNITED STATES The population of the United States was 92,228,496. New York was the most populated state. (According to the 1910 census, there were 9,113,614 residents in New York, compared to 7,665,111 in Pennsylvania.) UNITED STATES HISTORY On May 11, Glacier National Park was established in Montana by the United States Congress. In just two days, a wildfire referred to as the “Great Fire of 1910” destroyed 3 million acres in northeast Washington, northern Idaho and western Montana. (why do people build in this fire areas? ;) ) Angel Island, in San Francisco Bay, became the United States Asian immigration center. WORLD HISTORY Japan invaded and seized Korea. Your engineer was making 2 dollars an hour? |
My dad was an engineer (electrical) and I seem to remember he only started out somewhere around 3000 or a little above in the early 60's. Of course he was working for NASA and they are not known for the highest starting salaries.
I would guess there was a decimal misplaced and a mechanical engineer made $500 a year in 1910. That would sound more realistic. |
Prices of goods are irrelevant.
If, in 1910, I only made $200 a year, I could buy 1,429 cartons of eggs at 14 cents a dozen.. In 2010, If I make 40,000 a year, I can buy 20,000 cartons of eggs at $2 a dozen. |
