OT: Leland Kandahar defense question
Ok, I realize this is OT, but seeing as Leland practically lives on this board I thought it would be a good place to get his attention. Besides it brings the fact we are still fighting for this country back to center stage for a moment.
I still know a bunch of guys in the Marine Corps and the below was sent to me from a LtCol. I was amazed at the first paragraph and was curious if 1) Leland wrote it, or 2) does he know who did. The other paragraphs...to be expected. What else would you get from the best??? BTW I did not edit the below and have clipped as received. Subject: GOD BLESS THE MARINES The following is an excerpt from an email home from an Air Force ordnance demolition unit team member describing his first night at Kandahar airport: "One of the perimeter positions only a hundred yards or so to our left took some incoming fire and we all went to general quarters, taking defensive fighting positions in our bivouac in case they penetrated to our position. The Marines quickly repelled the attack. It will not bother me should I live my entire life without having to kill a man but I have to say I'm glad to be surrounded by a thousand 19 year-old Marines who can't wait to. They will be leaving in a few weeks and turning over the base to the Army. I will miss them. "The only tents the Marines use are one-man pup tents and they are everywhere. Each foxhole and DFP (defensive fighting position) around the camp is accompanied by two of these humble little tents. "I have a renewed respect for the Marines. They arrived a month ago, dug in, and have been living out of these ridiculously small, 5 x 5 tents ever since. No heat, no latrines, no showers, nothing but backpacks, weapons, helmets and flak vests, and lots of ammo. And they've been doing it every day. Four man teams at each position, two sleeping, two on watch. God bless them every one." Semper Fidelis Thanks for the plug Wayne...I guess you can put it OT now...

Leland,
Thanks for the information about that email. Rest assured the above story made its way into the in-boxes of tens of thousands of Marines. I am amazed that this was done by a MSgt though. You would have thought he was just out of boot camp the way he was hooting. To me, establishing a perimeter with the focus on security (vice comfort???) is a given. Why would we do things any differently? It really does bring the world a bit closer to find out you know (or know of) this guy. Yeah, if there was more than what I posted about the security around Kandahar he should be written up. I have ZERO tolerance for those that do not follow the rules of OpsSec. a MSgt??? He should know better. Sounds like it was for the best he lost his weapon on the way out there. I suspect the Marines were that much safer! Thanks again for the info. Nice choice in car BTW.

Thanks for setting us straight Lee...Now, WHEN THE HELL ARE YOU COMING HOME? Any idea? Oh, when you do get to Baltimore, start cruising the bars there? I want you to remember your mother's words: "Don't pick that up...you don't know where it's been!"

Leland,
Don't worry you sounded on target with your remarks. Trust me, is I thought I heard any negatives about the Marines I would have said something. I found it wild that my wife's old XO saw fit to send her a snippet of that e-mail and then my wife in turn sent it to me (she junks alot of that chain letter stuff. I took a look at the header and thought, huh, I know of a guy in the Air Force...huh, he is even in ordnance, so I took a stab to see if you knew about this... Wow, amazed there was a connection. Kinda like 5 degrees of Kevin Bacon... I appreciate the disclaimer, but don't worry about it. Thanks for being out there and taking care of all that stuff in the ground over there. I would imagine it is quite a mess. As for the reporters...god knows why the story is ever considered more important than the people. Nothing like a deployment to focus you on what is really important.
