Went to Whole Foods tonight and feel a little poorer.
Gawd, that place is spendy. $85 later and I came away with just one paper bag. They don't call it Whole Paycheck for nothing. I think I'll keep going to Trader Joe's and the local farmer's market.

Indeed, I don't think there is anything there you can't get at TJ and the local produce outlet, especially if you are on a meat-less diet.

Yep, we have a "Henry's" near by that carries most of the same stuff... but sometime you just have to go to whole paycheck for certain items.
We also have a giant Asian market "Marukai" that has all the same stuff (and more) but not all the labels or signage is in English so that makes it interesting. ![]()

We shop at 'Whole Paycheck' regularly. We compared prices to what we by between them and Ralphs and it was comparable. While they do have expensive stuff - if you play it smart you don't have to spend your whole paycheck there. The meat is a bit more pricey though - I tend to buy less of it. Their fish is not very good (at least not at the WP we go to). We do also shop at a famer's market that happens a few blocks from us every week. We've been getting most of our produce there but I wouldn't say we're saving a lot of money on it.

I've only ever shopped at Whole Paycheck for salad at lunchtime. Does Tropicana OJ taste better if you buy it at WF rather than at Albertson's? I don't get that. Most grocery chains have lame fish. For that we get the live stuff at Asian markets. Veggies are fine at most grocery chains. WF's prices are just ridiculous. There was a time when their beer selection was better than most, but no more. Don't know why Czechvar is worth $9 a six there and only $7 a six at Total Wine.

Cheapest coconut water in town is at Whole Foods. Seriously.
I have concluded that no one store has the best price on everything. I have separate shopping lists for Sams, Wal Mart, Whole Foods, King Soopers (a big Kroger grocery chain), etc. Though I do love Whole Foods, and I would buy everything there if I could afford it. Race tires are expensive though, so I gotta cut some corners.

We rotate shopping across Albertsons (a very nice, newer one), Trader Joes and Whole Foods with some overlap but essentially for different items at each. Unfortunately our nearest WF is 10+ minutes away but a new TJ's is opening up next weekend just 2 exits up the freeway, woohoo. I do prefer buying organic, locally-grown produce over imported stuff given a choice...

entertaining the idea

My wife was on a natural / health food kick earlier this year and we did a lot of our shopping at WFs. Let me tell you, on the occasions that I let one go, it literally smelled as if a horse quietly walked into the room and left a steaming pile on the floor and quietly left. I can't say this didn't have its certain charm at work, bit I digress.

That paper bag cost you 10 cents ... as I discovered earlier this week.

Walmart for staples and SAM's for meat and some Staples...and I HIT Sam's for the Reduced about to expire meats...it is Choice vs Select at the Supers... Then whatever is needed that is on Ad at the Supers...for example I buy Best Foods/Helimans Mayo on sale for $2.50 and STOCK UP... Also TJ is good for certain things as well. Been going there since the late 70's I can spend hours in the Asian market just looking at all the different stuff....and stuff like fresh Bamboo Shoots U just can't get anywhere else...

The only thing I would buy at WF is the freshly roasted Coffee..and the diff between TJ and WF is minimal..
