Miners will be trapped for up to 4 months . . .

In Copiapo, Chile - the main shaft of a gold & copper mine collapsed 17 days ago & 33 miners were undetected & presumed dead until today. They communicated via a probe & all are well in a stocked 'safe house' 2,300 ft below the surface.

But . . .
"the chief engineer in charge of the rescue operation, Andres Sougarret, has warned that it will take at least four months and more powerful digging equipment to reach the men.

"A shaft 66 cm (26 inches) in diameter will take at least 120 days," he said."

Deep mining is not my idea of a fun job. Very quiet news too. Do you think CNN will send down a team?

Wow, remember the song Timothy?

imcarthur 08-22-2010 03:28 PM

Ah . . I see CNN has finally gotten the news. BBC always beats them - even with US stories.

No, I don't remember the song.

I must have missed that 'hit' at the time. Maybe it was the pharmaceuticals of the era . . .

Don't worry Mark I'm another old Fuch that remembers it
But they ate Tim. Hope they have some snickers bars down there

So how many mining disaster songs can you think of?

YouTube - The Bee Gees- 'New York Mining Disaster 1941'

YouTube - Jimmy Dean - Big Bad John (1961)

I bet they make up a few new songs while they're waiting....

this kinda stuff just freaks me out, I've worked underground in Canada and never had a worry cause there has to be 2 ways in and out by law, been offered jobs overseas and never even considered it, I only do surface work.
There are some rules for working in a mine
1, never do coal
2, only cut and fill, never bench mining
3, only work in N. America
4, if you can, find a different job

Quecreek Mine, by Buddy and Julie Miller. Awesome song, but I can only covers on youtube.

That's pretty close to my personal list of rules about working in a mine:

1) Don't

I hope they're able to dig faster, that's all I can say. 120 days is a long time to be stuck in a hole with a bunch of unbathed men.

URY914 08-23-2010 01:43 PM

Hope they can get porn down to them.

Thats why I watch BBC for much of my news. CNN, ABC, CBS and NBC are last on the list...

I heard that they have underground water to drink. The mine owners have drilled a hole to get them some food and a LOT of batteries! It still has to suck. I guess it's better than death.

GothingNC 08-23-2010 03:27 PM

I pray they can get them out a lot sooner.

I can't imagine be trapped underground with minimal light, stale air in a small room going stir cray without a latrine.

Hopefully they can send down lots of air fresheners.

Buckterrier 08-23-2010 03:38 PM

Well it finally made OUR news. ABC Nighty News opened with the story. They mentioned how they were going to get them out but said two were obese. I think they'll be a bit thinner by the time the hole is done. Pretty good motivation to drop a few tons... do it or die.
Yeah, I'd not want to be around 33 unbathed peeing and pooping folks.

Zeke 08-23-2010 04:02 PM

If they can send down food, they can send and retrieve sanitary supplies.

Buckterrier 08-23-2010 04:32 PM

good point Milt... "OK here comes the ****e bag!! And send down some Old Spice"

M.D. Holloway 08-23-2010 09:18 PM

4 Months seems like a very long time - I bet they are sandbagg'n! They will be up in two weeks and look like heros.
