I dated a lady that taught deaf children sign language. One time when I was at her house the door bell rang and she just stood there signing and she pretended to be deaf. I just sat there trying not to laugh. You could hear them say to each other, what do we do now I can’t freaking talk with my hands! It was pretty funny.

We have a rule at our house, if anyone comes to the front door uninvited, the door stays closed (unless it's the paperboy)...

We never open for anyone we do not know - checking through thee peep. "No Soliciting" sign right over the door bell keeps 80% of them away in the first place.

I am not too worried about the peddling part, the problem is that some of them have their buddies on speed dial: If they can find out if you are an easy target / what desirable goods you may own / not home / on vacation etc. - they will be sharing that with their friends. Same goes for some of the gardeners. They will mow your lawn, but some of their buddies don't like that line of work ... so they fill them in on the lay of the land, the work schedule etc. I would be very careful hiring help if nobody is home all day long ...

We have a "No Solicitors" stick on attached to the front door along with the alarm company signs.

I had a college-age gal knock a not long ago. After I stopped our dog from barking like a wild animal I opened the door. She, too was selling magazines for "school". I was not in a great mood so I asked her if she can read.

"Uh, yeah."


I pointed to the sign. " I'm not one of those, I'm trying to earn money for college".

She started in with her speech so I simply said "we are not interested, sorry." She left and went to each house on our street.

I had some fly-by-nighters come by last week offering to seal my driveway.....for only $800!! They had out of state plates on the pickup they were driving. Told them NO WAY! and to leave. They went to every house on my street with a paved driveway. Am having it sealed next week for $275.00 and for the size of mine, that is a good price!
