I've put close to 100K trouble free miles on my m42, and my numerous attempts to replace it as a daily driver with something more modern haven't been too successful; they really are great little cars...the quintessential "slow car that's a lot of fun to drive fast". And if you keep the revs under 4500, 30mpg is a piece of cake.

Issues are minor with the M42 and are pretty much limited to (rare) premature failure of the profile gasket and the occasional lumpy idle. The latter usually a result of a vacuum leak coming from the rats nest of hoses under the intake manifold.

It's been a great daily driver but I won't lie; another 40-50 horsepower would be nice. Adding a passenger or two really kills the vibe. And if that passenger is on the heavy side, prepare yourself for glacier-like acceleration.

Wait?

Didn't u just buy the 996? Why sell it already?

I couldn't find a thread.

PS- hold out for a 325, 318 is definitely a gutless wonder.

Info on the 996 is here: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/off-topic-discussions/537365-my-new-not-real-porsche.html

It's like comparing a brick to a fighter jet.

I've driven both, and the 944 is a superior car from the performance, engineering, and styling standpoint.

I'd love to have another 944 as a DD... But as it stands my folks let me drive the corolla for nothing.... So I don't complain (much) and it doesn't break...

I've owned both, and I'll agree....totally different cars. The BMW is EASY to work on and the parts are significantly cheaper. If gaining performance is your goal, then the 325 is better too. LOTS of aftermarket stuff, including forced induction. ....all at a much cheaper price than a 944NA

The 951 is a different beast (owned one of those too)....but then again, it's hard to find one that's not been beat or modded.

For the money, the 325 is an all around better car, IMHO

LOL, I would hardly call a 944 a fighter jet. I had a good friend in college that had one and I always felt underwhelmed when driving it (in all fairness it was an 'S' and not an S2 if that makes any difference). Kind of like finally getting to second base with that well proportionedl girl only to find out her bra was 80% kleenex. At least with the 951, the goods are there to back up the "fighter jet" looks.

But if one is looking for a clean 944:

How about a mint condition low mileage supercharged first generation MR2?:D
