Daughter headed to college

Friday was a tough day. My wife and I dropped our oldest daughter off at UC Santa Barbara. She will be living in the dorms on campus. It was one of the proudest and saddest days of my life. My baby is becoming a young woman. I miss her already, David

I dread the day when my little girl goes to college.

Did you "accidently" drop some of your business cards around the dorm?

Our son started at a local community college two weeks ago. He's still living at home and has 2 part-time jobs to help pay for school and expenses. It's hard to think of your kids as "young adults" when you still clearly remember them as small children. So far, the hardest thing was when he started driving and the inevitable 1st car crash!

She took a family photo and I happen to be in uniform!

Same here, I guess as a parent you've been working towards this day, hoping that you taught the right things

Good move! Make sure she keeps it out in the open at the dorm...

My daughter went to UCSB, turned out fine. Joined her Mom's sorority Pi Beta Kappa, IIRC. Very early on in her teens (like 12) I told her what boys want, and what they will say to get it. Told her you control the boy, the boy doesn't control you.

She either understands that by now, or she doesn't. Good luck, and congrats.

Good going. My two sisters and I graduated from UCSB. We grew up in the student ghetto of Isla Vista, so it was pretty much the only choice for us.

I will go out of my way to help a UCSB grad find a job, and most are very well educated. I did fire a UCSB grad last year, though. Decent job skills, but he had all the ambition of an overfed house cat. Best wishes to your daughter

Congrats!

I'll be in the same boat next year. Can I borrow your uniform for a family photo?!!

I went to UCSB. Lots of fun and partying, but a good education, too. After this year, I recommend she find a beachfront place on Del Playa. It will probably be her only chance to live in a place with a sweeping ocean view. The next beachfront community down the coast is toward Sanata Barbara, a neighborhood called Hope Ranch. Beachfront there will cost you $15 mil.

True.

I took my Daughter to ASU last month, headed back to Parents Day this coming Friday. I am, like you David, impressed with our daughters pluck and resolve...while I miss her, I understand the next wave in our relationship. Never easy, but we raised them right.

I had zippy affiliation with the Greek system when I went to school, Arden decides that Chi Omega works for her (very focused young woman, makes her own way). Her call.

They love their Dad's as much as we love them, David. But you know that...well done.

Best of luck to your daughter. I'm also a UCSB grad, and have great memories of my time there. I second the recommendation for living on Del Playa at some point in her stay there.

Small world. My brother dropped his son off at UCSB same time. Also first year, living in the dorms etc.

So if your daughter is interested in a very smart boy—let me know.

Very interesting. All the jumping up and down you do about how terrible America is, and how wonderful Canada is and now we find out that your family is sending their kids to America for an education.

We will remember this for a long, long time....

You're a wanker Joe.

My brother has lived in LA for almost 40 years.

Fingers in ears, LA LA LA LA LA LA LA LA LA LA LA (don't want to hear it).

I'll be going through the same thing in one year, and I'm not looking forward to it.

So the black sheep of the family stays home huh?

You might want to review the rules on the OT forum.

Added on 11-24-04:
What matters here is that we treat each other with mutual respect, and deal with each other in a mature manner.

Wanker huh? Is that a name of respect up in Vancouver? This is the second time you have called me a name on this forum and neither time warranted it.

Keep digging the hole deeper...
