Training wheels off too soon?
Went for a great mountain bike ride last Saturday, with a bunch of guys who know how to ride.
Had one minor spill (I never come off the mountain bike), got back up, spit the gravel out of my teeth, and continued, with a bit of pain in one of my bloodied fingers. Completed the ride with minimal use of the front brakes, and figured the swelling would be gone by Sunday morning. ...Not quite... Come Sunday, the swelling has grown quite a bit, and there is some extensive bruising in the palm. Come Monday, probably time to have a pro take a look. X-rays reveal a broken bone. Now I'm typing this with one hand, as the other is in a splint from fingertips to elbow. Pretty doubtful the 911 will be getting out of the garage for a few weeks. The other bummer is I was to be mountain biking in Vail this next weekend. Doc says to keep off the bike for a while. Oh well, broken bones heal. Probably won't be posting often, as one-hand typing takes a while. |

When you crash next time, keep your hands close to your body and roll.

"Monkey" is understood, not unlike, "Get off my lawn," where "you" is understood.

One nurse asked if I was riding a bit too fast. Of course! That's the way we ride! Still, it's been a long time (years) since I had a major spill. I've had this Cannondale for four or five years now, and haven't had anything more than stepping off to prevent going over. |

Don't be a girlie man. Brush off, climb on, and do it again.
![]() Been there done that. (I still feel your pain though) I took a header over the bars a few years back at 40mph +. Stitches in all four limbs. Initial impact; landed on the elboes and knees position, bounced once, landed on back (camel back saved me), bounced again, landed on fore arms, then cart wheeled down the mountain side for another 30 yds or so. Not pretty! Ended my ride by continuing home another 16 miles, showering, then telling the wife....I think we should go to the ER. ![]()

If you don't crash occasionally, you are going to slow.
