I need a new refridgerator
 

My wife and I have been planning this purchase for a while and I've been really looking at GEs since most of our new appliances are GE (hood, cook top and oven - THANKS JAMES!).

I'm just wondering if I should consider another brand or not. Right now I think we're looking at either this one:

Probably the first one though...

We have all GE Profile appliances (except the microwave and dishwasher, which were GE, but prematurely failed) and I WOULD NOT recommend them. Please look at other brands, especially Whirlpool. Take a look at this website, it's for appliance repair people and NOBODY on that board recommends GE appliances. We have a GE Adora washing machine that is 3 years old, cost $1000 and now needs to be replaced...

We've been happy with our Bosch refrigerator. Picked it up at the Sears outlet for better than half off. One minor scratch that you can't see, now that it's installed.

My GE Refer has just celebrated its 20TH year of trouble free service..

My GE Dryer has completed 24 years of trouble free service.

That is NOT TO SAY the new stuff is any good.

If I wanted to get new appliances I would be checking the local auction houses...and places that sell newer applainces..like a consignment shop. With all those foreclosures the stuff is going cheap...$200 can buy a Refer....

Look for one that has separate evaporators for the refrigerator and the freezer. Most have the evap in the freezer and just blow cold air into the 'fridge. Two evaporators give much more consistent temps. I've had a Samsung for four years that is great!

GE gets good ratings. The more expensive stuff. I wouldn't shy away from GE if the unit had the features I want.

It's 35 5/8" wide and the space we have is 36" wide. I'm worried about being able to open the door as one side is a wall. If I look at the way my current fridge is though even though there is a wall there I would be able to open the door most of the way before the handle got in the way.

We have a GE hood, Cooktop and oven and haven't had many problems with them. The only real problem is one of the light sockets in the hood has bad connections and the light doesn't work.

We have all GE Profile appliances. I build high rises in NYC and the last couple of jobs I did used them as well. I have to say, I was surprised at how the quality was not as expected. In my house other than the slide in stove, I was not impressed with the D/W, Ref., or M/W.

You might look into have 2 identical units, one a frig and one a freezer. Trimmed into the kitchen, it looks like a custom unit for about 20% of the price. This is what I plan for the next house/kitchen.

That said, you probably still have access to the GE site I sent you. Check your pricing there, vs. what you pay elsewhere including delivery.

I am still accessing that site - the pricing on the last fridge I mentioned was better than retail but the others was about the same.

Where do I look into those custom units you mentioned? I've been waiting on this a while and saving. Gwen's waking up and stink eyeballing me every morning she doesn't have a new fridge though so I need to pull the trigger like yesterday.

That last one was actually the 'Clean Steel' version and not the stainless - not sure what the difference is...

Check on those exterior finishes. I had one lady tell me that her faux stainless steel was the biggest PITA to clean. I have some real SS and it's easy to clean.

A pro cleaning lady told me to use Pledge on SS appliances. I used it on my kitchen hood and liked what it did, but I have not used it on the fridge.

I wouldn't take a GE if you gave it to me. Samsung the way to go - period.

I always feel like a T-Rex trying to get into the guts of a residential fridge. I am not a big guy and there is never enough room to work on them....
My Jenn Air/Maytag has been pretty good, but not without a couple of glitches that I had to repair when it was out of warranty.
A buddy had replaced his fridge with a GE at the same time I bought mine. He now has a Whirlpool....

We have an LG french doors refrigerator, and have been very happy with it. Wife absolutely loves it, and the price was right.

I'm wondering why so many people misspell it and put a "D" in refrigerator. Pretty common.

I was trying to figure out where the spelling came from... I've seen Fridge, too.

There was a Fridgedaire brand with a 'D' in it, maybe from that?

Not criticizing, just wondering...

I'm a Consumer Reports junky. I can't buy every brand & model & keep them for years to see how they perform and last. I don't have the facilities or knowledge to test them either, so I usually look at the group of top models they recommend. I won't necessarily buy the one at the very top of the list, but this has worked out fine for me over the years.

I noticed my mistake earlier - I make it often knowing better too.

French door looks nice, very nice, but if you have a lot of stuff in the freezer, it will take you "3 months" to dig to the bottom of the basket to find a thing you are looking for.
