Chimney - Mortar Sealant
I need to seal the mortar on the chimney on top of my house (BEFORE winter sets in).
Google found me a product called ChimneySaver. You just clean the mortar and brush it on. I think it is an elastomeric compound. Their spiel looks good, but nobody around here carries it. ThoroSeal waterproofing can be found around here, but the only decent hardware store in town doesn't know much about it (tho they have it in stock). It looks like something you'd use for tuckpointing, which I am trying to avoid. Ideas? This is in the PNW so extreme temps are not a huge issue, but moss is. THX! With some things, there isn't a "quick fix."
The first thing I think when someone says that is half the chimmey is falling over. In that case, a non-slippery canvas tarp and tuckpointing is the only option. Repainting the entire chimmy with an exterior uv-grade expoxy paint is the best long-term sealant, provided the flashing is good. (edit-here is one pro company...no experience with any of the products...PROSOCO, Inc.) |

it is not falling out
when I use a steel brush on it for cleaning, the surface gradually abrades away as a "powder" there is still a lot of mortar in the area between the bricks |
