Suggestions For A Digital Gadget Watch?

I realized that I haven't bought a new watch in at least 6 years. In the meanwhile, five of my watches have given up the ghost or need repairs (on two the electronics failed, integral bands broke on three more). So I'm in the market for a new watch.

Normally I'd be looking at simple mechanical models, automatic or manual-wind. But I don't want to spend the money for something really worthy. And anyway I feel in the mood for a gadget watch.

Due to aging eyesight, the pilot's chronograph + slide-rule sort of traditional gadget watch isn't working so well for me. Kinda diminishes the "coolness" to have to fumble for reading glasses before you can read your watch.

So I am thinking: DIGITAL and ZILLIONS OF FUNCTIONS. Mixed analog-digital would be fine too.

Functions I want: day-date, world time, 2+ alarms (loud ones), count-down timer, chronograph, automatic daylight savings/leap year setting. Functions I'd think were cool: temperature, altitude, compass, GPS, cardiac, LED light, shark-killing laser beam.

Something like this maybe. Suunto Core Multifunction Watch - Regular Black at REI.com

This is a world of watches that I know nothing about, so am looking for suggestions. A few hundred bucks or less.

Take a look at the new solar powered, radio controlled watches from Casio. No need to wind/change batteries plus always on time.

I own the Oceanus (Diver) below. Take a look at the Oceanus range.

Other options are Pilot:

Axio makes some gadget watches that seem pretty affordable, as low as $80 on sale. Axio Max Altimeter Compass Watch And another cheap brand, around $150 too. AltiForce Tactical Altimeter Watch These are light on the time features - no countdown timer, no world time, and sometimes no compass.

The last Casio Paco posted (hi Paco!) has everything I want. Including world time, countdown, five alarms. Not sure about the looks.

Why are Suunto's $300+ when other watches that look similar, with similar features, are $80-150, and most of the Casio's are also less expensive. What is (allegedly) special about Suunto?

Seiko made a "TV" watch back in the 80's. I still see them once-in-a-while on E-Bay:

I had one of these briefly back in my horse(watch) tradin' days. It had a built-in weather station. Again, with some patience, can be found on E-Bay:

I have a Suunto Core and it's pretty HUGE on your arm. Reading the manual is not an option, either, it's required reading. Lots of goodies, though.

I love my Casio Pathfinder. It is a good geek watch & tough enough to wear all the time.

Is it too big (thick) to fit under a dress shirt cuff?

Not sure you would want to wear a Suunto Core with a dress shirt (unless you're in IT or accounting):

You guys really need to stop doing this to my wallet...

Good thing I couldn't get away with wearing a beast like that at work...

It's about the width of my pinky finger, so I'd say it's just a little bit bigger than a modern, big-ass dress watch (technical term.)

Its smaller than the current batch of 52mm case dress watches... And big ass doesn't even begin to describe them. I'm a small guy so I have to say no to the big watches.

Invicta... I don't understand it... Invicta Watches INVICTA-F0007 Men's Reserve GMT Silver Dial Stainless Steel, Invicta Style, Invicta Save INVICTA-F0007

I like the smaller stuff of theirs.

That's Invicta's copy of the Rolex Yachtmaster. Not a "dress" watch, but a "sport" watch. You wear that when yachting off Nantucket, not with your Armani and Brioni.

This is a dress watch:
