Got an ipod. Got some cheap earphones. If I called the sound quality "tinny," I'd be exaggerating its fidelity. Can I assume that nicer earphones would produce better sound? If so, what earphones should I consider?

I've heard there is an "app" I can download from something called the "Internet" that will allow me to transfer music onto this "ipod." Anybody understand what I just said?

Get some better earphones - will work much better. I have the noise cancelling Bose headphones, and they work really well.

App? Internet? There you go, talking that funny talk again. Best cut that out before you get hurt.

Once you download iTunes to your desktop the iPod will sound much better. :)

Seriously though.....iTunes isn't going to impact my audio quality, right? It just allows me to transfer music into the Apple language, right?

iTunes won't hurt you, Jim. I've only used iTunes to rip songs from my CDs and its never been a problem. It is the interface program for your iPod to your desktop. iTunes manages your music files, videos and books. You create playlists and manage them in iTunes.


You'll enjoy it, especially if you interface it to your daily commuter.

Buy an Ion USB turntable, about $90 bucks. You load some software, play an album when the side finishes, you are prompted to input album name, artist and song names. With scratchy or classical albums it has problems "hearing" the pause or quiet between songs, so you may have six songs on one side of any album, but you sometimes will only get five places to enter songs, so you have to improvise like call it song1/song2. Fill in "song" name.

Hit enter and it uploads to iTunes. Helps to follow the easy directions so you can hear the songs through your computer speakers, but easy to do. You can spend more on a Denon or others if you want better quality, but with old albums I don't think it makes a lot of difference.

Funny... I'm hard core PC guy... but I mess with computers so much at work I never touch it at home (the computer that is)

Now that DSL is down to $19 a month... and a good router is under $100... and I played with an iPad at the mall.

I'm thinking DSL + WIFI + iPad.

But don't tell the guys at work!

Stay away from low bit rate stuff.

Will sound tinny even with good cans.

sound quality can be affected by [1] the bit rate/compression used -- I use Apple Lossless

[2] the D to A conversion -- you can buy quality ones that plug into the boards ona PC or work via the USB port -- the ipod D to A is said to be "not so bad"

sound quality will also be affected by the A to D conversion - with an Ion you are doing that yourself; if you spent $50,000 on a stereo system you will want to spend some $$ to load your vinyl up....

Okay......I downloaded "iTunes." I opened it up, plugged in my ipod, etc. I looked and looked around in "iTunes" and could not figure out how to load music onto my ipod. Can someone tell me which mouse clicks I am looking for?

First have iTune import whatever music is on your computer, into the iTunes Library.

Then plug into iPod and set up synchronization, means you tell iTune what music you want it to put on the iPod. Can be "all" if you have enough room on iPod.

Sorry, I don't recall exact clicks, but search around the menu.

My iTunes "library" has music in it. Apparently, the program did that automatically.

I looked around the menu, clicked on a fairly large number of menu items and sub-items. And I still don't know how to tell iTunes to load music onto my ipod.

Manually highlight all the songs u want and drag them onto the iPod icon on the left of the screen.


Click on the iPod icon so it shows the summary page of how much space is available. On that screen there is a box that asks about manual or auto sync If u choose auto sync it will put whatever music is in your iTunes library onto your iPod

The other option is find a 12 year old kid. They will show you how it is done. :)

Another way to improve sound quality (besides turning up the bit rate samplling) is to mess with the EQ settings on your iPod. "Bass boost" tends to help reduce the tinny sound.

Seriously, does iTunes see your iPod?

My PC sees my ipod. Knows that it's connected. I didn't bring it to work today, though.

I just have a stoopid little ipod Shuffle. I see no EQ or tone adjustments to make.

Skullcandy earbuds are cheap and provide lots of bass. I buy lots of them seeing that I have teenagers!!
