2005 Carrera S, tiptronic. What do I need to know?
 

Wow. Just came across a 05 C2 S, tiptronic (old style tip, not double clutch). 13,000 on the clock. Crazy good deal on the car. From a Porsche dealer.

No warranty.

Is it worth getting a basic engine/transmission policy on the car?

Any information much appreciated.

From what I remember the 05's still have the IMS issue. I could be wrong but if they do I would suggest a warranty. Good luck with the car.

The 997's have proven to be super reliable. I wouldn't and don't have a warranty but I did have one when new. The thing is nuts fun to drive...

I will post there, but last I checked, the 997 forum is not exactly a lively place.

Maybe they don't break down enough.

I'm also itchin for a 997, a GT3. The 997 board on Rennlist is much more active and could answer all the questions. I would guess 6speed too, but I don't go there anymore!

The 05s did not have the IMS issue. In our experience they have been the most reliable porsche engines yet. I would still recommend a extend warranty. They usually run $2000 for a 2yr/24k.

What I wouldn't give to own one though not saying I would forsake my Carrera in trade.

I had a friend that had an IMS failure on his 05 with 27k on the car. He had about 2 weeks left on its warranty.

That's not a "crazy good deal", my friend. 997 street/cash prices are really low right now, from what I'm hearing. The two guys I know with '05 997s have had exactly *zero* problems between them with their cars. Not scientific, I know but still...

I'd have to agree.....that's not a "crazy" deal, but about what they're going for at various dealers and ebay! You might want to look for a little newer one with a few more miles. If it's at a dealer, negotiate an extended warranty! If it's the "one" you want....go for it!

Nope, 05's did have the IMS issue, but there is some aftermarket help and I think the number of 05's that failed is actually low relatively speaking:

Intermediate Shaft IMS Upgrade and Retrofit Kit for Porsche 911, Boxster, and Cayman models

Porsche upgraded the IMS for the 06 model year.

I agree with Speeder. I'm in the market for one of these as well. 53K is high retail. There's a Tip S with Sport Chrono in SFO with 45K miles for $42K. Not that I would consider a Tip. Just sayin...

This car has got to be a daily driver. I live/work primarily in north Seattle. Getting stuck on a steep hill in heavy traffic, in a rain storm, with some Prius driving ahole 2 inches off your rear bumper is not fun. And it use to happen to me all the time.

Dunno. I swore I would never go tip, but I'm a convert. The lack of shifting (if you choose not to) doesn't take away from car. At least not for me.

Yeah. And it has 45k on it. This car has 13k, and its so clean you could eat off it. The dealer is doing the 20 and 40k services on it. Its getting fresh rubber. Its coming from an outstanding dealer that has treated me very well in the past.

Street prices and prices from dealers are clearly different, and our prices in the pacific northwest are often 5-10% higher than the rest of the country.

OK, so you're willing to pay a premium from a dealer. But it's not some smokin' deal, that's all we're saying.

Is the $53K their asking price, or what you have negotiated down to, from a higher original price? If it's the former, start negotiating. You should be able to get it for well under $50k.

Coming from a dealer I'd expect a warranty. Maybe there is no warranty because they know something is wrong with it..... just a thought.

Nothing wrong with it. In fact, they decided to certify it, so I will be getting a 2 year warranty.

The car is loaded. Sport Chrono package, nav, parking sensors, heated seats....its a well equipped car.
