I think I know why the previous owner ran the 40-95 strings - they were pretty flexy. The DRs are like playing a graphite rod. I need to get some nicklewounds...
If your in the mood to try some different strings check these out. Rotosound 99's I really like them but they are hard to find...

Beautiful. I'm glad to see that those have the proper number of strings, as well. Never could figure out what you guys do with that fifth sting. Do you use it as a spare in case one breaks?

Gorgeous toys Todd. Wish I had the rythm required to play.

Now lets see you give them a work out like this....

Not in any bands at the moment that are in that vibe, but I'm actually starting to work on more chord stuff with the short scale. I'm searching for a good teacher to take a few lessons as well. Got inspired seeing a Rush documentary last night with Neil Peart talking about taking classes with Freddy Gruber. If he can use some lessons, I certainly can...

This is what I'm more likely to be doing. Well, unless it is a jazz gig. I'll have to try and get a decent recording next Saturday with the jazz quintet.

Those are really intersting looking things Nostatic, they look beautifully made.

With that bridge arrangement, how do you adjust intonation?

roto sounds EAT frets and fret boards. Ask me how I know. They also have a shelf life that is pretty short. I like half rounds. They still get that bright round sound but don't make corn rows up your neck. Stainless bad, nickel good.

True, but roto's sound so damn awesome! The thing I like about the PSD strings is the core of the string is what contacts the bridge saddle. Extreme sustain aggressive midrange and super bright highs. - think, john entwistle's sound that can be heard on his live recordings.

I am putting away my pennies to put together a bass from parts chosen from Warmoth. When I get the parts, I am going to have one of the Master Luthiers from the old Curbow company assemble it for me. It's going to be a 5 string, but strung EADGC.

Same way I have my Pedulla Pentabuzz set up. I do not need to take part in "low-end" battles with synths. And re: Rotosounds.....you might try their "Swing bass sets", I use them on a few of my Fenders although I still have 2 of my older P's strung with the "originals".

John is my hero, and I had the opportunity to work with him a few times before his death. HE is one of the big reasons why I play T-Birds and used Rotos, I wanted his sound.

I'm about to order something like this for my roundwound needs. Thankfully it'll take a few months to finish

You can't do individual strings, but the entire bridge can slide. What Rob does is set the intonation after he builds it, then puts two small pins in the bridge assembly to hold it. Those can be easily popped out, then the bridge moved. The reality is that intonation shifts based on a change of strings or even the age of strings. So chasing intonation will give you fits. That is one reason I prefer to play fretless - you're doing intonation every note you play

I used to work for a record company. I worked with him on a couple of tours when they came into my area. It's not like we were best friends. We talked basses and he signed one of my T-Birds for me. I got down on my luck and sold it to the Hard Rock buyers. It's prolly sitting in a warehouse somewhere. Life has it's regrets.

I ran into John a few years later in Tampa airport. He was in St. Pete promoting his art that was showing in a gallery there. He recognized me and we talked for a while. Sadly he was dead a few months later.
