Building a better lawn

My summer landscaping project and lawn rejuvenation is coming to an end. It's been a long hot summer and I'm getting close to wrapping it up.

I've dug trenches, installed drain systems, built a flagstone walkway, added lighting, berms, plants, decorative gravel beds and finally a new lawn.

The new lawn is in and doing great so far.

I removed the old lawn, tilled, fertilized with a starter mix, seeded with a blend of KY Blue, Fescue and Rye and topped with a light coating of very nice compost.

It's been a week and the grass is beautiful.
I water twice a day.

When is the best time to fertilize again? Which type?
When should I seed and compost again?

Congratulations Randy! My yard looks great, too. The only thing I did was make it rain exactly when it should have and exactly as much as it needed.

Trenches, drains, fertilizer, seed, compost, phhhht!

(Fertilize right now; low nitrogen. Seed in spring. Compost every minute of every day forever and ever. Do this and you'll be mowing and mowing and mowing and mowing...)

I have used Ringer's Lawn Restore for years. It's organic, cannot burn the lawn and I apply it in the spring and the fall. That's it. I never cut my lawn shorter than 4" (highest setting on mower) and I never use any herbicides, weed killers, "3 in 1" products, etc... I have the best looking lawn in the area and I don't spend very much time/effort at it. Ringer's isn't cheap, but it's well worth the $.

I just use basic scotts turf builder, it's simple and works.

I tried bandini fertilizer, once. Burned spots in the lawn big time even though I was real careful about spreading it right and keeping it watered.
Ended up throwing half a bag away.

I can't seem to find the Ringer locally yet. Sounds good though. No luck at HD or Lowes. May have to order from Amazon.

When is the right time to mow for the 1st time?

Our local ACE or ACO hardware stores sell Ringers's, it's not available at the big box stores...

Thats the way my folks place usually looks... Its rare that anyone has the time to mow ~4acres...

gr8fl4porsche 09-15-2010 09:50 AM

Found it at one of the local Ace's.

Thanks for the tip.

Any tips on when to mow for the first time?

Ringer's and lawn care regimen

I fertilize in the spring when the Forsythias are in bloom (1st week of April this year) and now when the grass is at least 5 inches tall. I set the lawnmower wheels at their highest point and NEVER lower them! Here's a picture of our lawn in early spring a couple years ago... The yard in the background is not mine. Our yard is in the foreground.

In the fall, I mow/mulch leaves with the lawnmower until Thanksgiving. I don't leave any leaves on the lawn during the winter.

it all depends heavily on your area

call up the Ag. Extension people in your area - put your taxes to work
