Old Volks Thread

cgarr's thread about his old 72 got me thinking about VWs and the good ol days. Post your pics of your old rides or your new "old" projects you have going.
I'll start with my new project car I bought a couple of weeks ago.
Its a 1969 Bug. It doesn't have the original motor but I don't care. Its not going to be stock when I am done anyways. The rest of the car is mostly original.

My 67. Won alot of trophys with this car. Built and painted this in one of those tiny one car garages in the background. I was very popular with the neighbors when i lived there.!

I owned a '68 for about 1 day. Bought it, took it out to the dunes, flipped it. Barely walked away alive. Took the plates, left the car there.

No pictures unfortunately.

I've been rumaging through all my old pictures down in the basement and found a few from the past.
My first car. (also a 1969)

Always experimented with bigger and better motors.

My 1970 Karmann Ghia with my new bride driving it. Also my 1984 Interceptor.
I think I miss the Karmann Ghia the most. That thing was a rocket ship!

I had six Bugs back in the day.

This is in Berlin with my Mom behind the wheel. I was born several years later but this was the first car I ever rode in. No carseat or seatbelts.

This is last Bug I owned circa 1988 with my then girlfriend behind the wheel.

Let's see, I owned 2 buses, 2 campers, '59, '65, '69 Beetles, a Baja bug of unknown vintage, & a '71 Super Beetle. One of my all time favorite cars was was my '65 that I bought for $700 and completely refurbished. I loved getting in it in the morning, cranking open the sun roof and driving it to work. It's the only car I have ever had stolen.

Here is me and my 'ex with my aunts '64. Its pretty well worn out, but it was still kinda fun to take to prom.

This bug needs an overhaul but my aunt is too cheap to do it...

Too cheap for a type 1 overhaul? You can get a kit with all new jugs, rods, pistons, bearings, flywheel, studs, seals, rings, etc etc etc for like $450. And when you're done, it's not just rebuilt, it's brand new.

Exactly... Of course you could toss an elephant through the play in the steering rack.... The whole car is sad. If it was a newer super or older splitty I'd be trying to get her to sell it to me... But it's nothing special so I just ignore it.

If the 64 is solid, it is worth doing something with.
Maybe a nice little 1835 with dual dellortos or webbers decent little cam and it would be pretty solid. Downside, more than likely a swing axle instead of IRS.
I like the lines on the pre 68 cars. Take the bumper overriders off and a nice set of big 5 bolt vintage empi wheels.....
I have to scan some of the pictures of my VWs.

My first car was a 63 Bug which I don't have digital photos of unfortunately. It was nothing pretty but ran great. I did think I got taken when I bought it for $400 in 1979 or so. I had test drove it but only around the guys neighborhood. On the way home it wouldn't do more than 30mph on the freeway. Oh crap! Turned out to be a bad spark plug wire. Some time with VW for Dummies book and it was running great.

These are my current old bugs. Vintage racers. The Zink that I'm driving in the pic has new paint now on the nose. The RCA that my son is in is partially dissambled to provide donor parts for the other car. Once I get settled I'll get that one running again.

Mine weren't exactly old but they are in the past.

This was my daily for a few years, entertaining yet a PITA at the same time.
