I have gotten stuck with bad checks a few times. What I did was to go to the issuing bank. They will usually tell you if the person has enough money in their account to cover the check. If the money is not there, keep coming back until it is, preferably on paydays... fridays, the 15th and end of the month, etc. Quote:

I got paid with a rubber check by a fraternity at Carnegie Mellon Univ. for a gig my band played there. It was around $600, which was a lot of money for college students in 1993. Of course, their rubber check caused me to bounce a bunch of checks, as this was in the time before overdraft protection. I went to collect in person and the fraternity house was literally being demolished by construction workers. However, I found their treasurer while there and he apologized profusely, wrote me another check for the amount plus the NSF's I had incurred and it cleared. I really thought I was screwed there.
