Our next door neightbor has a dog that barks incessantly. Border Collie that's tied up all day.
Bark, bark, bark. bark. BARk. bark... nonstop. all day long, with few periods of silence that last only a couple minutes. Anything he sees or hears, he'll bark. Squrrel. Crow. Other bird. Car passing....
UPS, FedEx, or mailman particularly set him off.

I've called animal control a few times, and mysteriously, when they come out, the dog has a silent period.
Dang.

But this time... I call, and the lady is right over.
She hears the dog going slighty crazy, and turned around in our driveway between the two houses.
It was at THAT MOMENT that UPS decided to pull up...
and the dog went @pe*****.



......And the nice animal control lady finally confronted the owners...

The owners should be tied up.

Of all animals to tie up, a BC is absolutely the worst candidate. They are busy, busy dogs, highly intelligent, easily bored and who need a job. This dog's only job is to bark when he's tied up. Pis$ poor dog owners.

Yeah, the owners need to be kept in a closet for a couple of years.

I hate to see dogs left cooped up in a back yard all day. We used to live next to some people that had the sweetest miniature, long haired dachshunds, that they kept in the back yard. In my neighborhood now, there are some folks that keep a golden retriever and some tall, lanky short-haired black dog out in their back yard. The yard has a rut running the length of the fence beside the road. The dogs, both of them are super sweet. If you walk up to the fence, they'll stand up and just stand there while you pet them.

My pets, since I was 3 have always been indoor pets. 12lb dog, or 100lb dog, it didn't matter.

That is one nice thing about being self employed. Just bring my puppy to work. She enjoys hanging out here and most of the clients like having her around. She knows how to kennel up, so that is never a problem if the clients don't want her out.

beautiful pup, really sweet looking. She's got eyes like my dog, just happy to be with you and eager to please.

A close friend raises guide dog puppies. Socializes and evaluates them. Raises them for a year, then they go to Guide Dog College (hopefully). Labrador. Dog cannot be left alone. Ever. My friend's wife does not work. My friend brought the dog to work one day, as part of the socialization. The dog slept quietly under his desk. Apparently someone complained. Someone who doesn't like dogs.

Someone who doesn't like Labrador puppies. You see......there are some things I don't understand.

The issue is tying the dog up. Would be much better to have a large run or let it roam the back yard. Of course, it still should go out for at least 30 minutes twice a day.

People are morons if it comes to pets.

WOW, someone that doesn't like lab puppies or labs, well, that is just wrong.

My lab,Lady, comes to the office every morning and is happy to greet the patients, I have patients that only come in when Lady is there. After her greeting she goes back to her spot and sits down to wait for me to finish my work and she gets to say goodbye. In the afternoon she hangs out in her kennel.

In the yr that I have owned her, she has maybe barked 5-6 times, thats one bark only. Most amazing dog.

Exactly... that border collie might still bark all day if it weren't tied up, but there's a much greater chance it would be happier if it were allowed the run of the entire back yard.

Our dog loves being outside... we'll let him in to eat, and in five minutes he's barking to let us know he's had enough of Peopleville.

He even prefers to sleep outside when the weather is good like it is now.

I have a Border Collie and I could never see tying him up all day. He's the equivalent of a nuclear reactor in terms of energy... he has soo much of it. Not to mention, Border Collies have great personalities (maybe I'm a bit biased though)..

A friend of mine in a densely populated residential community in Orange County, CA, very properly and politely asked his neighbor if he could put his small yapping dog in the house on occasion when my friend was entertaining in his well appointed back yard.

The next thing he knew, the dog had been debarked. Now when we sit outside amidst the cool ocean breezes, cigar smoke and some nice port, we hear the sad, squeaky, rasping croaking note of the debarked pooch. It's just so sad... :)

why don't these people buy themselves a kid...
as to the Vet..
hope someone debones him..
cause if you say he wants to run & play..
he will amputate the legs..

Wow that's messed up. We had someone at work training a service dog bring it in every day for months at a time. Everyone loved having it around, but the dog couldn't be confused as anything but a service animal because of the vest and harness.

Social-able pets left alone will get seperation axiety and express it with barking, scratching, and/or defecating(especially when left in proximity with other dogs).

Border Collies are smart working dogs and need to stay active. They instinctively want to run and herd other animals(including people). That dog sounds bored.

This reminds me of a Swiss joke:

A couple in Basel is kept awake, night after night, by the dog barking in their neighbours yard.

One night the husband jumps out of bed and declares "I've had enough!" and runs downstairs.

Ten minutes later he is back, and says "there, that will teach them".

The barking is even louder now.

The husband turns to his wife with a smug grin and says "I tied him up in our yard. Now those swines will find out what it's like to be kept awake by the neighbours dog all night."

ba da bing.

what ended up happening? the owners change anything?

i couldnt imagine a border collie tied up all day. that dog needs to be doing a job for sure. i almost adopted one. named "lightning". he was that much energy. i took a hard look at my life, and i realized the limits and declined. great dog. that dog needed to search ruins for hidden bodies. he wanted to work.

+1. My parents had a BC, and it was great. They trained him to round up the horses, but he was also good at chasing off moose and deer, as well as herding cats. Amazing dog.
