HDTV In other Rooms...

So I have a cable box/DVR on my big TV. My wife got me a small 720p HDTV for my birthday. Comcast told me that the only way to do this is to get another cable box for $7. I thought that the Telecommunications Act of 1996 said that they had to allow third-party access to channels that I pay for.

How can I get my HD channels in another room without paying Comcast more money?

The 3rd party device needs to provide a mechanism to authenticate your account with Comcast.

Think cable card.

Without another cable box as long as you are fine with watching the same thing that is on the big TV you can pass the signal via a balun, but you would need to wire a piece of CAT 5 between the cable box and the 2nd TV. But you are still stuck with always watching the same channel. It's not cheap ($150-200) plus you need to run the wire. If your house is hard wired for a network you can probably patch it through your structured wiring cabinet.

What about an antenna? The airwaves are free. Or do you get premium channels in HD too?

Generally the way it works is any network or OTA signals are rebroadcast by the cable company unscrambled so any device on your home network with a QAM tuner can receive and display them.

Then there are your premium channels, anything above the lowest tier. Those are broadcast scrambled and you need a set top or third party box that can authenticate.

You can get a hdtv antenna and get some channels in hd. Depending on what your signal is like, you might get the main channels. You can also try to link to the other box like mentioned. In the end, the $7 a month you spend to get all the on demand programming and dozens of hd channels is hard to compare. No one likes to give Comcast anymore money. I currently have 3 hd dvr boxes and one hd only box that is nice and small. Soon you will have options with fios or internet broadcasting. How soon?

It's rolled out already but with limited channels.

HBOGO
MaxGO
Epix
CNN
TNT
TBS
Adult Swim
CN
truTV

Some of them are premium so unless you already subscribe to the premium you won't get them streaming until you do subscribe.
