Apparently, the lesson that should be learned from this thread is that one must always assume that one's mother is absolutely bat$#!t crazy and should never be trusted with one's stuff.

Especially jackets.

on the other hand..
I'm amazed what my Mom saved and felt was 'important'

As you get older, stuff happens to your stuff. It gets ruined, stolen, whatever. Stuff is just stuff. If its value to you is sentimental, then the value is not in the stuff, but rather in your heart. As I say, stuff goes away......with one exception. The stuff in your heart stays.

lm6y 10-01-2010 03:31 PM

Sounds like you need to not leave your stuff to clutter up Mom and Dad's house. My Dad would have thrown everything I had stored there at his house, outside on the lawn after a fit like that. Then told me tough ****. I keep nothing at Mom and Dad's, it's their house.

Sorry you lost the jacket though.

teenerted1 10-01-2010 04:05 PM

free storage? you get what you paid for...

go home for the holidays and bring back all your ***** or get a storage unit in MO.

dont forget to get something really nice for your mother to show your apriciation for all she HAS done for you.

I think you should sit mom down in front of the roaring fireplace and look at her old wedding dress and pictures. Then toss 'em in.

They're just old pictures and a dress. She'll get over it.

Eventually.

Sorry about your jacket.

I doubt your mom woke up one morning and thought “I am going to throw out the jacket my son loves just to piss him off.”

It was just an ugly jacket to her.

She wouldn't have done it if she knew how much it would upset you.

It Kinda Suks, and I remember how happy you were to get that jacket. Give it time, and you will figure this all out.

Separate the dream from the jacket, and keep the dream.

This thread is weird. It's weird because of all the stuff that I have and I wish someone had thrown it away. Especially the stuff my mother gave me before she died and the stuff I got after she died. I mean what do I do with her wedding dress?

I know, that's not a rare leather jacket. Maybe if she wore a leather jacket at her wedding I'd feel differently.

YTNUKLR 10-01-2010 05:32 PM

Sorry your jacket got all messed up, which sucks. You should have worn it onto the plane, shipped it, or paid to store it somewhere besides the family house. Your mom just sounds like she has a mind of her own regarding your stuff - I don't think you're going to change her now, you just have to be aware of it and deal with it appropriately. You needed to have taken the jacket with you, shipped it or paid to store it. End of story, you're a big boy.

My little stories on losing important stuff:
Right before my grandma died, she was about to sell all my G-pa's WWII wings, bomber jacket, flight helmet, Nazi weapon collection (firsthand take-offs!) and I threw a fit. Boxed it all up and took it home that day. She passed away months later, and that crap would be in a Salvation Army bin somewhere

Oh, and Grandma threw out ALL of my family's 8mm home videos and 2,000 + slide photos, plus all the books (some first edition Dr. Seuss etc.) she read to me when I was a kid. [I'm not mad about that at all, any more. I would rather just have my grandma back for a day.]

Be grateful for what you have.

All the best,

It's amazing what a good thread title gets you... If you all haven't noticed, I'm really good at 'em.

VINMAN 10-01-2010 06:39 PM

Vinny- it's different. Close, but different.

VINMAN 10-01-2010 07:29 PM

Yeah, just looked at your pic again. Few differences.

BeyGon 10-01-2010 07:42 PM

If someone tells you you can store something there, anyone but especially family, and then throws it out, I have a problem with it. People are one thing, you can't expect much, but you would think family would have more feelings for what you think. You left something there in good faith, if they didn't want you to do it, they should have said something and you could have made arrangements.
I wouldn't be all that happy either Shumi.

I'm literally in tears as I type this. I can't really think of any other possession I have that I would be this upset about. Anything else- ANYTHING I could just re-buy. Drums, cars, books, anything. But not THIS JACKET.

You're kidding, right??

I may have exaggerated a bit on the tears part. But I was pissed.

Spend years in court with them, and multiple 6 figure legal bills. Then you'll know what it's like to be angry at family.
