Street Signs........Someone stop the insanity
Amendments made in 2009 to the Federal Highway Administration's Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices for Streets and Highways says street signs now must use both lower and uppercase letters, instead of all uppercase lettering.
So "WASHINGTON ST" must now become "Washington St," and it also will have to be printed in a font called Clearview. New signs also must carry a higher degree of reflectivity. Changes to both the font and reflectivity will make signs more visible for drivers, an FHA news release states. The mandates have cities throughout the country groaning over the cost of replacing their street signs. New York City plans to spend $27.5 million to swap out its street signs for ones that meet the new requirements, the New York Daily News reported. The federal manual says municipalities have until 2012 for all street signs to have 6-inch lettering.

The whole country? My relatives live in an old neighborhood: Glenside, PA. They have these cool old red street signs.
I think upper and lower is a good idea, but I'd be surprised if it didn't apply to just new signage.

I predict a spike in accidents....
A lot of folks don't some much read the signs as they do recognized the shape of letters. We've been reading caps so long.... ...with citys hurting for money, I wouldn't be surprise if some refused to do anything. New signs or replacements sure, but tear down and replace? Guess I'd be sucky as a mayor. I don't like to spend money on stupid sheet. |

You watch, the next thing they will do is mandate that they be in f***n Spanish.
I will vote and campaign for anybody that can stop Government documents from being printed in Spanish or any other language other than English. I you can't read it then it's not for you! I might even vote for Jerry Brown if he promised to make the DMV and Voting English only.... OK maybe not Jerry Brown.... but somebody.

Yes, b/c construction guys from Florida are known to have the highest IQs. Seriously danny you aren't funny. You really know very little about who I am or my intelligence... You seem to have money... Money does not = intelligence or class. It just means you got lucky. You jump to quick conclusions about me based on my age. Which is a very very wrong assumption to make. I may be young but I am not dumb.
Edit... Ignorance may have been the wrong term... But you guys are griping about a topic that very few of you have ever had any experience with. Last edited by porsche4life; 10-01-2010 at 09:01 PM.. |

I'm surprised they don't also want them lower and in Braille.
No, wait, they'll make that change after this one is fully implemented. ![]() This is all so stupid. |

Under these regs they will only have to replace the panels themselves not the structures. It is good to replace that sheeting anyways, it has about 15yr lifespan.
And ya... The sign industry has such good lobbyists... In most areas things like street signs are run by the municipality. Sure they have to buy them somewhere but those guys aren't making that much markup. 3M is the one who benfits the most from this. We are talking about thousands of MILES of sheeting. That stuff is pricey too. |
