My Receptionist wants a $7.00/hr raise!!

Come in early on Monday, since it's going to be a really busy day/week. On my desk sits a short note from our receptionist that says she is requesting her pay go from $13/hour to $20/hour. Holy sheot!!!!
I did her first year review about a month ago and let her know that she was doing a good job as a receptionist (ansering phones, copying, etc). I have had this discussion with the wife regarding her advancement and she doesn't have the right stuff to be more than a receptionist. Very nice lady, polite with customers. $20/hr for a receptionist?! Am I missing something. I know that the cost of living is high in socal, but I have never discussed this kind of pay with anyone who has considered her job. For $20/hour it would be an office manager that was sharper than a tac. What do you think? Am I outta line here!? |

Anytime I've gotten a raise, especially a 50% one, I've been given plenty more responsibility.

 What was her reasoning?
	 |

She has pictures of you with the goat?
	 |

If she's like Joane on Mad Men might be worth it.

Her reasoning was "I have proven that I accomplish what needs to be done and in a timely manner". Very vague. In our business plans, I have already come to the conclusion that she will always be a receptionist and we will have to hire someone else to do the things that she can't (scheduling training, instructors, etc). She's been here over a year and still couldn't tell a customer enough detail about our product (usually they don't ask too much). We are in the corporate flight training biz (simulators, jets, etc). |

Tell her this Pelican will take the job for $16.
	 |

Tell her you'll meet her half way, $17.00 then tell her you only need her 30 hours a week.
	 |

$20/hr is top of the top receptionist pay. That's 40k/yr. There's not enough responsibility to give her at her position to justify that.

This is Joan from Mad Men. She would be worth 20 imho. |

 Steven,
I am paying an accounts receivable bookkeeper / receptionist $800 per week and she has a lot more responsibilities than your girl. In the light of this economy, I think you could afford to say no and look for someone else if necessary. Just my opinion. PS: The SC should be into paint in Nov. |

 You should...

		...reply two words; Bon Voyage

There could be more to this than meets the eye, as her ex is an airline pilot that is retiring soon. She is getting some of that I know. This could be a way to get out of a job and get unemployment to boot. And as far as that SC thing, you're driving me crazy!!! |

Tell her you were thinking more about a yearly bonus! See how things go and if the company does well and can swing it then she would get a 14k bonus that way you are not locked in..

 Show of hands here:
Who could reasonably expect to walk into their bosses' office and ask for this kind of raise, (in dollar amounts, let alone percentage of current income) and walk out with that kind of a boost in pay? Sheesh, If I asked for that kind of raise (or any kind of a raise) right now, they would probably dock my pay for being such an out-of-touch imbecile. (Ironically, I'm here at work succumbing to distractions instead of working :-) ) (as an aside, Joan from Mad Men just does not do it for me :-) ) |

Maybe she threw up a big number with the hopes of a compromise. She really only wants 2 bucks but sounds like it backfired as you have lost respect. Like others said – in today’s economy, you may be able to find a superstar with growth potential at the $13.
	I say NO! |

Maybe she's trying to get "let go". It happens.
Otherwise, if you like her offer her $15 and give her more Responsibility and see if she will step up. |

what i'm surprised at no one mentioning.............is the FACT, YOUR EMPLOYEES MAKE YER BIZ!
NOT YOU! if you have happy monkees , you get HAPPY WERK! if you have MAD monkees, you have POO POO WERK! if you have HAPPY monkees, you have LOYAL MONKEES! no man is an island and it takes a TEAM to kick azz and take names. please look up the "classic" SAILSMANSHIP poster that hung in my dads office. shows a sailing ship with each sail having a different ASSET that is needed for teamwork. he was the corporate mgr. and had quite a few employees and all of their daily headaches and excuses. RECESSION HELL......................SELL! was what i was raised with and believe me i wore out quite a few pairs of shoes pounding on doors and "ASKING FOR THE ORDER" and "FINDING A NICHE" to sell our products/services. the MOST VALUED ASSET YOU HAVE is YOUR EMPLOYEES! hell i gave mine, BOTH(2) a $5 dollar an hour raise recently. they earned it also. as rickster stated , they were given more responsibility and when i can turn my back, and they get the job done to the nth degree and i dont find them screwing off. well then I'M A HAPPY MONKEE MANAGER aka EL-JEFE GRANDE PREZIDENTE MAGNIFICO! |

 just say no.
and then run an ad. an outrageous request IMO. |
