A buddy wants to give me part of his bonus

So a friend of mine got me into the job I have recently started.

It was not an easy task, to be honest he has got me interviews 4 or 5 times and while I did not really 'blow' them - there was always some confluence of events which prevented me from being 'the one' for them to hire.

This time - I overcame all other confluences and made it.

I put him down as the employee who referred me. I feel like he worked hard for the bonus he got for recruiting me - it isn't 'small' but it isn't large.

He is writing me a check for half.

I wish he wouldn't but sayin 'no man, you don't have to' hasn't worked. I certainly don't want to hurt his feelings.

I dunno what to do - should I just take it and get him a little something with it (which I planned to do anyway) or ....heck...just not cash the check.

Quality problems eh?

Take it then take him and your respective SO's out for a nice dinner and spend more than what he gave you.

That's what I'd do.

It might be tough to spend that much money on a dinner...but it really is a nice idea...

He feels good to do it, so take it and then be very generous with him. Then you both feel good.

At a buffet maybe but there are these places called restaurants where you sit down and someone comes over to ask what you want. Then you wait a while and someone else will bring it to you.

They can be pricey.

I got a $2500 referral bonus for getting a guy, who had been recently laid off by our company, rehired onto my team. I was to get another $2500 after he completed six mos. with the company. He abruptly quit after six weeks for reasons he could and should have made clear long before he got rehired. My boss said HR would probably want that first bonus returned, but he wasn't going to say anything about it. Anyway, I had really sold this guy to my boss and when he quit, I felt like Lefty and Sonny Black vouching for Donnie Brasco. I was definitely not in a sharing mood after that.

I like this idea - I probably can't spend it all on dinner without some hookers and blow too (precluded by the wife's presence of course) but still a good idea.

At my last company I brought on a guy who had worked with me in the past. A really great guy, good friend and a 'meets expectations' kind of employee (which he was fully aware of).

I sold the job as 'the best place I had ever worked before' and for a while it actually was.

Then they outsourced everything and he was gonna get laid off. I felt bad about it, was really relieved when he found another job.

Keep it set aside as a slush fund. If you ever need to help him out, it's there.

Agree and take him and the wife out for a very nice dinner to show your thanks. Then back him up all you can at work and make him proud that he got you onboard.

I would not accept it. I would tell him I am offended and that he is welcome to take you and the family / wife whatever family units you have out for a a great night of food / dancing etc. to celebrate your new job.

I would tell him it is very likely ILLEGAL to share your referral bonus with anyone and that you'll rat him out otherwise. Say this in a way so he can't tell if you are joking or not.

Seriously, the referral bonus is his - your upside is having a new job that was good enough for you to want to accept!

George
