A quick geometric question

Is a five sided shape called a polygon? Think of a cardboard box. Is that a polygon?

mossguy 10-06-2010 08:21 AM

pentagon or polygon.

Best,
Tom

5 is pentagon

PolyGram was the name from 1972 of the major label recording company started by Philips as a holding company for its music interests in 1945. In 1999 it was sold to Seagram and merged into Universal Music Group.

No. polygons are 2d. An open box is 3D.

No a square as well as a pentagon (2-D) is a polygon.

A box or cube (3-D) is a polyhedron (technically solid but still adequately describes the shape).

5 is pentagon, poly is "many", 5 is many, so a pentagon is also a polygon.

Best,
Tom

In geometry a polygon ( /ˈpɒlɪɡɒn/) is traditionally a plane figure that is bounded by a closed path or circuit, composed of a finite sequence of straight line segments (i.e., by a closed polygonal chain). These segments are called its edges or sides, and the points where two edges meet are the polygon's vertices or corners. An n-gon is a polygon with n sides. The interior of the polygon is sometimes called its body. A polygon is a 2-dimensional example of the more general polytope in any number of dimensions.

The word "polygon" derives from the Greek πολύς ("many") and γωνία (gōnia), meaning "knee" or "angle". Today a polygon is more usually understood in terms of sides.

Usually two edges meeting at a corner are required to form an angle that is not straight (180°); otherwise, the line segments will be considered parts of a single edge.

The basic geometrical notion has been adapted in various ways to suit particular purposes. For example in the computer graphics (image generation) field, the term polygon has taken on a slightly altered meaning, more related to the way the shape is stored and manipulated within the computer.

Your two sentences are talking about 2 different things.

a pentagon is a 5 sided 2 dimensional shape

A cardboard box is actually a 6 sided shape. If the sides are all square, then it's a cube, or if the sides aren't square, then it's a rectangular solid. If it's a 3 dimensional shape with 4 sides, then it's a tetrahedron (3 sided pyramid add a side for the bottom) or if it's a 4 sided pyramid, then it'll have 5 sides and the only name that I know if is "4 sided pyramid". I'm sure there's probably something like pentahedron or something like that.

Interesting, pentahedron, there are 2, so another besides the square pyramid.

Pentahedron - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Quote:

In geometry, a pentahedron (plural: pentahedra) is a polyhedron with five faces. Since there are no face-transitive polyhedra with five sides and there are two distinct topological types, this term is rarely used.

With regular polygon faces, the two topological forms types are the square pyramid and triangular prism. Geometric variations with irregular faces can also be constructed.
