I am going to be stuck in jury duty for a few days and was looking for a good book to help pass the time. I have allrady read the gold plated Porsche and any of Wayne's books are two big to carry around.

Garth Stein - "The Art of Racing in the Rain".

When you burst out loud sobbing while on jury duty, you'll be excused very promptly. Then you can read the rest of it in peace. Think of it is a day pass!

Any of the Speed Secrets books are great.

Vic Elford's Porsche High-Performance Driving Handbook is a nice mix between historical racing stories, Elford's personal stories, and driving tecniques.

I have a couple on my bookshelf at work:

1) Speed secrets: professional race driving techniques by Ross Bentley
2) Secrets of solo racing by Henry Watts

both are pretty interesting reading. There weren't any revelations or stuff I had never thought of, but they reinforce and explain concepts and techniques and make them clearer.

"Fast Guys, Rich Guys, and Idiots" Don't remember the author's name at the moment. He was a sports writer who began pro racing in the developmental series at the time. Rabbit Cup, Firehawk, etc. Semi-autobiographical summation of his experiences. Great read if you can find a copy.

How about leaving the book at home and listening to the case? Could be that someone's life or future depends on the jury knowing what the hell is going on instead of focusing on your car.

If you like "The Gold Plated Porsche", then you might like Stephan Wilkinson's next book "Man and Machine".

I'm going to check out a few on this list I haven't heard of before.

It's kind of interesting to see how the author used racing tidbits to reflect on the main character's dilemmas.

I've only been called for jury duty one time in my life so granted I'm not an expert on these things, but that one time I spent hours and hours sitting and waiting.

It would be nice to have something to read for those wasted hours while waiting for the 15 minutes you have to pay attention.

Two rounds of jury duty in the past for me. FIrst time one eight hour day spent in the pool waiting room. Never was called. Second time was three days in the pool waiting room. Went to one court, was excused during voi dire (spelling) because I owned spoons. It was a shooting case, and the defense was planning an accidental discharge defense. Didn't want me on the jury. One hour in a court room, three days in the holding area. Bring a book.

And how does someone tell when "the 15 minutes you have to pay attention" are there? Is a bell rung or ?

Totally understand while waiting in the pool of jurors but once you are chosen its "game on" for most of us and requires a persons undivided attention.

There are many places in this world where a person on trial is not given a "trial with a jury of their peers" and unfortunately its often not fair. Lets pay attention and do what our brothers, fathers and fore-fathers fought and died to protect.

I'm pretty sure if you try to read in the jury box the judge will have something to say about that.

So... if somebody's talking about bringing a book, I doubt they are talking about reading instead of paying attention to the trial.
