Fish farming in backyard pond anyone?
Farming is overstating it a bit, but anyone raising fish in a pond?
There's info on the web, but anyone here stock their pond (or a pond) with fish? Let's hear about your experience. The pond I'd be stocking is 1.75 to 2.0 acres and as deep as 15 feet in spots. I'm thinking catfish and tilapia. |

Tilapia are non-native potentially invasive fish...
I'd look into just sticking with the catfish. Depending on where you are, crawdads may be a possibility too.

My pond (about 1/2 acre, 12' deep) has large & small mouth bass, bluegill and white amurs (grass eaters) in it. While I do feed the fish occasionally for fun, the fish are on their own and seem to require no management. The only fish we have added over the 15 years was a couple new white amurs to replace a couple large old ones that died.

Our pond is stocked with Catfish, Perch and a few Buffalo Carp. Feed them dog food pellets and they will grow as big as your arm! (prolly taste like dog food though...)

best thing about ponds like that is when it gets over ridden with turtles... talk about alot of fun... getting head shots on turtles with .22's... makes all your friends parents that like turtle soup real happy....

Small pond, 15' deep 30' across, rainbow, brown and brook trout. I really enjoy them.

What kind of aeration, if any? The pond I'm considering has an aerator in it, but I'm wondering if it needs to be fancy or needed at all.
I'd run the aerator just to keep the surface clean/clear, but I'm concerned about the fish if the aerator crapped out for some reason. This is a "mature" pond, with plenty of frogs, vegetation, etc. I imagine I won't need to feed the fish since there appears to be plenty of algae, roots, etc. Just trying to gather info. Pics later if all goes well. Last edited by MotoSook; 10-13-2010 at 12:06 PM.. |

My pops would be in heaven if he can pull out fresh fish for every meal . He loves fish, loves catching it, and he'll probably be on the pond with the kids (grand kids) everyday!

check local regulations. you cannot release alot of fish. dont get caught! i believe every fish/game dept has a pond advice department. call them?
healthy ponds do not need aeration. stinky, dying ones do. a simple fountain to spray up will suffice. i have seen bubbler you anchor at the bottom to. but a fountain seems easier.

Good call on the fish/game Dept. Will check with them. But do they have jurisdiction on private agricultural property in most states?

What does your overflow discharge into? Regardless of jurisdiction, you don't want to introduce non-native species into waterways.

My pond is partly filled in and the PO dumped goldfish in it. Personally I could care less, I hate fish. But I do love all the wildlife that it has especially the blue and green herons, foxes, deer, turtles, birds, etc.

they do have jurisdiction to natural ponds. i believe your koi pond..you can tell them to pound sand....well, no..i know a chinese dude that got fined for keeping largemouth bass in his koi pond. i dont know how they found out either.
check with fish and game.

The pond is isolated within the property.

I've looked into Aquaponics, whereby the pooped up water is used to irrigate your hydroponic vegetable crop of lettuce, basil, and what have you, which in turn cleans the water so the fish can poop in it again. Very efficient use of water, plus who doesn't want 450 bushels of basil (or whatever)?
