paying back an old debt

10 years ago my current wife and I were in a custody battle for my daughter from my first marriage. My former father in law was a surgeon with deep pockets and he funded my ex wifes legal expenses. I had to ask my family and also my wife's family for money. My current wifes family contributed 1000 dollars to help with the legal expenses.
During the course of an lively discussion about money, my wife reminded me of her families contribution. I had truly forgotten about it until that moment. Her mom and dad could really use the money now as they have both retired and the economy has taken its toll.
I would like to pay him back but don't want to make a big show of it and it is not even neccessary that he knows. I am not sure he would accept the repayment at this point.
Any suggestions on how to give somebody a thousand dollars?
Scott

I would write him a nice note about how much you appreciated his generosity and put the cash and the note in an envelope and hand it to him. No need to make it a big show, but the note and repayment will be appreciated.

+1. Be low key but let him know how much it helped and how you (and his daughter) appreciated it.

Low key, one on one. Just a handshake and thank you and cash.

Definitely cash. He may not cash a check if you give it to him.

And in the future, never forget a debt!

Don't forget a reasonable interest rate.

Seems like a sound idea, but the father may hand it back if it's cash. Maybe there's another way to handle the "interest." A prepaid card to a store, something,

BTW, kudos for intending to pay back the loan. I have one for the same amount that went stale years ago, in fact, the last recession.

It would be good to add interest (at least savings account rates) as well. For example, $1000 at 2% compounded interest for ten years would have earned $221.20 Savings rates used to be higher than that and of course they are now lower. Its not a lot but they could probably use it. Talk with your wife about how would be the best way to do it and be sure to thank her for remembering.

give them a $2000 gift. dont even say what it is for.

a chinese person would stuff the brandnew bills into a decorative red envelope and hand it over. they would get cash and luck. win-win!

I disagree slightly. They should know they are being repaid.

If you want to go the gift route, give them 1k in cash, and send them on a $1k vacation or something like that.

Can you (or your wife) get your hands on his credit card number?
$1000 off his mastercard debt is a nice surprise, and he can't knock it back.
